YA-- The BBC asked this team to film some of the most endangered animal species throughout the world. Adams has recorded their adventures seeking the komodo dragon, northern white rhinoceros, mountain gorilla, kakapo, baiji dolphin, and the rodrigues fruit bat. There is biological information here, but it is inaccessible for report writers due to the lack of an index and the wordy descriptions. However, these same accurate portrayals and Adams's entertaining style will expose students to the worlds of these animals. He moves rapidly from informal, laugh-out-loud descriptions of his travels to serious pleas for awareness and conservation of all animals. The full-color photographs are in two separate sections and help readers to visualize the unusual animals (including the authors).

No matter if you are a Hitchhiker fan or interested in environmental subjects or interested in out-of-the-way travel - or not! This book is excellent reading. The subject matter is very serious, but as this is also a travellogue, Adams is able to put a good amount of humor into it as well.
Adams is very honest - there is no "I'm such a great environmentalist and writer" stuff in here. Just straight-forward information about the travel and the animals - but the man just formulates himself so well, that it is a pure joy to read. Seldom have I giggled so much while reading a book - and yet I learned a lot about the situation for endangered species - and how not to travel to Africa ;-)

Douglas Adams beschreibt in diesem Buch seine schwierige Suche nach einigen der letzten Exemplare aussterbender Tierarten. Auch wenn man von ihm eher satirische science fiction gewohnt ist, ist dieses Buch grossartig. Es handelt sich um eine Reportage, die aber nicht den gewohnten scharfsinnigen Humor vermissen laesst und dieses Thema einfach mal von einer anderen Seite betrachtet. Fans von Adams Humor kommen hier auf jeden Fall auf ihre Kosten.

Changing between the urge to cry and laugh, you simpy cannot close this book before the last page. The detailed and sympathetic description of both the rarest of animals and their caretakers and protectors simply makes you want to repeat the voyage and get to know them personally.
