This technothriller reveals that something is eating its way from the core to the surface of the Earth. If it continues, it will weaken the globe's interior and collapse the entire planet. The Russians jump to the wrong conclusion and blame the USA. The author is a theoretical physicist. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Unsurpassed scientific thriller! 31. August 2012
Von Bodie - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I originally read the Krone Experiment in the late 80's shortly after it was published. It was then, and remains, one of the very best scientific fiction thrillers I have ever read. If you are a fan of Michael Crichton, this one is definitely for you! The author, J. Craig Wheeler, is a renowned astrophysist, professor, and author of many journal articles and textbooks on the subject. His command of the subject lends authenticity and detail to the plot. The characters are well-developed and his prose is taut, compelling, and believable...which makes the scientific issues discussed truly frightening! 5 Stars, but only because 5 is the maximum! Can't wait to read the sequel, Krone Ascending, which only came out last month. Hope he doesn't wait another 24 years to publish his next work of fiction!

Science Fiction not Spy Thriller 1. April 2014

I thought it was a spy thriller and it turned out to be a science fiction novel. It wasn't too bad until the revelation as to the cause all the problems. From there forward it was downhill. I always finish any book I start. But, dang it was a chore.

Excellent Hard Sci-Fi Black Hole Earth Eater Story - Not As Formulaic As Most! 12. September 2014
Von Tom Brown - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
I really liked this novel as it had some very good hard science fiction. It was not as formulaic as many of "black hole eats the earth a bit at a time" stories with some good science on the real real orbit of such a body, maximum altitude science, modern Google Maps type searches, mass conversion, etc. (This should not be a spoiler for any science fiction fan, as one could guess a black hole early on in the book. In fact, it took too long for the scientists in the book to figure it out, surely some of them read sci-fi, and the symptoms were all there!). A bit too much in the way of politics for me, but a good short-term resolution with a traditional "enemy". There is a sequel to the book, I suspect to cover how the proposed solution is panning out, and apparently an "indie" film was made of it. In one place, I may have gotten myself confused, but it seemed to me that the rotation of the earth should have caused the artifact to appear in the opposite direction than what was stated. Excellent use of mass for conversion, unlike most science fiction which seems to create mass out of nothing and with no explanation.

Exciting, Classic Hard Sci Fi from the Mid1980s 15. Oktober 2012
Von systemguy - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Despite being written a quarter-century ago, this story still resonates because the hard science it is based on remains relevant today. In the story, a curious, seemingly innocuous phenomenon threatens to cause a nuclear war (which was still very plausible at the time of writing) before it is even understood. The plot involves several CIA technical personnel in a fast-paced battle, both with a thorny technical problem and the challenges of bureaucracy.
Not to spoil the plot, suffice it to say that near the end of the story, the threat of nuclear war is of secondary concern compared to the real threat that is uncovered.

The story, previously published in print is well-edited with only a few misspelled or mis-used words. It concentrates on the scientific aspects of the plot with only a few side trips into interpersonal relationships not directly involved in the main story line. The plot is tightly written and accelerates toward the end. There are a few parts of the story that made more sense during the heyday of the US SDI (Star Wars) effort of its time than today. If the story is read in the context of the time of writing, they do not significantly detract from the story.

At the time of this review, the book is free on Kindle. It is well worth reading. There is an indication in comments after the end of the story that a sequel is forthcoming. I am definitely keeping an eye out for it.

Too many and too long technical descriptions, otherwise it was an interesting subject to write about, I did finish the book.
