The Washington Post says, “The map guide lets you be inconspicuous: it’s as small and light as a novella, and its flip-out maps could pass as a flyer to a cool club.”

“Make sure you never lose your way in a strange city. Each of the Knopf MapGuides captures its city’s pith in a package as small as a passport wallet…”– Real Simple

“Knopf MapGuides are handy, practical and perfect for those of us who are slightly impaired when it comes to map-reading. You don’t have to search a huge crackling sheet with a microscopic index for one of 10,000 dots on the map…The extraordinary quality of the books’ beautiful hues and heavy paper also give these $8.95 guides an evocative quality that stands apart from the glossy, garish look of most travel books.” – Marin Independent Journal

“A good, handy portable item for a quick trip” – San Francisco Chronicle

“We love Knopf’s smart new map guides.” – Travel & Leisure

Discovering Russia's Window To the West Through Walking 9. Juni 2005
Von A Customer - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
As the founder of a company devoted to enriching cultural and business travel to Russia, we are always looking for a good books to recommend for our clients. One rare book in my collection of Avant-Garde graphics is by Alexandr Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova, "Moscow Reconstructed." Written in 1936, it is a huge volume which describes with pride the re-construction of Moscow, the capital of world socialism. Throughout there are pop-ups, handles which take away old scenes and uncover new vistas. "Knopf MapGuide: St. Petersburg" reminds me of "Moscow Reconstructed" in that it encourages the reader to interact with the text by unfolding a series of bound maps and viewing the selected neighborhood along with the best in sites, shops and restaurants.

Most of the major streets are in both Cyrillic and Latin script, something most maps available in the West don't have.

The listings of sites in each neighborhood will please most any visitor to the center of St. Petersburg, and the names are given in both Cyrillic and Latin (but because of the translation of names from Russian to French to English, some are unfamiliar-"Nest of Nobles", for instance, went unrecognized by the popular restaurant's staff!). There are no web sites for sites, nor is there admission pricing listed, although the restaurants have the price of an `average' entree.

"Knopf MapGuide: St. Petersburg" is a unique guide in its small size and easy-to-use format. It is perfect to accompany the adventurous walking tourist exploring the center of St. Petersburg, and is a useful aid for those Discovering Russia.

essential tool for walking St Petersburg 29. Mai 2008

Format: Taschenbuch
This book is actually a collection of detailed maps of sections of the city, where each map is annotated with
a short list of key tourist sites, some restaurants, cafes and bars, and shopping places. Each annotation gets a two sentence description.

The key virtue of the map is that it is extremely detailed, so it is hard to get lost using it, and if you do get lost,
street names are shown in both roman and cyrillic characters, so you can pattern match street signs of you
need to. The reviews of cafes was also a godsend when late in the afternoon, after a day of walking, you
wanted something to fortify you until dinner.

The only challenge was that the transit map was inadequate to navigate from the airport to downtown.
I used this map in May 2008.
