...and by far not so dark as the TV series "True Detectives" that made me read this book. It is quite entertaining to read the late 19th century text about a predicted fictional 1918 World War (had not happened by the time the book was written!) with a German general "von Gartenlaube" (that translates to "garden shed") being defeated at the US East Coast.
People in the book play with alchemy and of course read the theater play "The King in Yellow" which makes them insane, however the tone of the book is much different from the sexually-perversion centered TV show.
Here people suffer their insanity with dignity, muttering old fashioned phrases - and probably biting the police officer coming to arrest them. Still a good read if you want to know what this King in Yellow is all about. Though... we never actually get to know that I guess. I admit I stopped after the first two short stories in this book, was busy planning my vacation in Carcossa.
