5th Edition (2014)

When two men break into Leonard Samson’s house, beat him unconscious and murder his six-year-old son, the police arrive to a gruesome scene. But they are shocked to find the mutilated bodies of the two intruders in the front room of Leonard’s home, while he waits in the kitchen with the surviving members of his family.

Clarissa Chapman is a DCI of Psychokinetic Investigations - a new area of police work - instigated after the first genuine case of psychokinesis was discovered some fifteen years earlier. The Samson case is brought to her attention due to the strange way in which the two intruders were killed. She suspects Leonard Samson is a Kinetic.

All Kinetics are blessed with a gift to move objects with only the power of their mind. But it is also a horrific curse. Within a few years of discovering their ability, they gradually develop violent insanity, and for this reason are locked away in specially designed prisons for the benefit of public safety.

After discovering that the authorities suspect him of being a Kinetic, Leonard Samson runs; unaware that the police are not the only ones pursuing him.

As the days pass by, Clarissa becomes increasingly aware that certain aspects of the Samson case just do not add up...

WARNING: The first two chapters of this book depict a violent home invasion which some readers may find upsetting.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great story, needs a little proofreading 4. Februar 2012
Von Rachel Sincere - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I read a lot. I am pretty picky about the storylines and the pace of the books I read. This book was really very good. The story sucked me in from the first couple of pages and it never lost me. I read it in a few days. "Kinesis" was much more than I expected for a free book. I imagine it can go very far.

I almost gave "Kinesis" four stars, just for the proofreading. It almost drove me nuts. Please, if you could just give an eighth grade teacher a copy and a red pen and let him/her go at it, it would be such an improvement! The most glaring error was the use of plural possessive instead of plural in the word "Kinetics," another one was writing the word "nevertheless" out as three words. I see so much potential in this book that it would be a shame to let it go to waste with sloppy proofreading.

To anyone thinking of buying this book, I would encourage you to go ahead. It is fast-paced, the characters are interesting, the story will grab you and not let you go until you are finished!

5.0 von 5 Sternen So Much Suspense! 7. Februar 2012

I really loved this book and went into it with a preconceived notion I would find it boring. It was anything but. The thing that really makes this a true thriller and nonstop suspense is how real this could be. For anyone who has seen the uncomfortable "fear" that people get from the "unknown" or "misunderstood", this will truly grab you in and you will not want to stop reading until the book is done. The characters were introduced naturally and have much depth. I hope to see other books by this author very soon. I think he has true talent. - A word on "errors"- they really were not so bad that it interrupted the reading. BTW, I could truly see this book being made into a movie with Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson as the main character. While reading I also had thoughts of the movie Phenomenon with John Travolta and Kyra Sedgwick... If you have seen that movie you will be familiar with the accusations thrown out and the way the FBI treated John Travolta when they wanted to "study" him. Great book- Write some more!

3.0 von 5 Sternen Fast paced, riveting plot with holes 28. Juni 2012
Von J. Golton - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
I really liked the basic plot concept, the gripping characters, and the fast paced drama. However, the response of police, special police, and private investigators seemed implausibly weak to me, especially during the second half of the book. Given how I saw the U.S. react to Bin Laden and everyone associated with him after 9/11, the response in this book seemed anemic in comparison, despite what seemed to be a threat of potentially larger magnitude. The book reads like a really wonderful second or third draft that wasn't quite yet finished. Refinement from professional editing and more extensive consulting with actual police and military personnel (for heightened realism) could have turned this into a really great book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fantastic New Thriller! 29. Januar 2012

An exciting and believable supernatural thriller. The premise is simple - how would society react if we discover a group of people with supernatural abilities. And I don't think Mr. Spier's vision if far off the mark. A great read, I hope he continues his stories in this universe.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Lacks complexity and sophistication 22. Oktober 2012
Von E. Hung - Veröffentlicht auf
Checked this book out of the amazon kindle lending library based on the strength of its ratings but was sorely disappointed in the quality of the novel. I wonder if I would have bothered finishing it, if I had not been so ill-equipped on my recent cross country flight. Regretfully, I had forgotten to pack headphones and not bothered with preparing alternate reading material.

A man, who may be harboring a secret ability, is on the run from both a clean cut police investigator and a morally corrupt bounty hunter. Another man, whose ability is not secret, works to escape confinement in order to take revenge on the investigator who captured him. I guessed early on how the plot might resolve and kept reading just to see if i was right.

To be fair, a predictable plot alone doesn't make for bad entertainment. But, the writing style used to describe things--people, settings, internal thoughts, plot development etc.--was so rudimentary and too the point, I felt like I was reading a textbook, or downloading the contents of a lecture straight into my head. There is no rhythm, no joy, in the author's phrasing and sentence construction. Barely any wit or humor exhibited by the characters in the book.

The scifi element in this book also lacks development and complexity. The author does provides a fair amount of historical exposition, which I admittedly found entertaining, and perhaps two "oh, cool" moments; but in the end, his explanation of how things work or might work seemed only half-fetched--just enough to get the plot rolling, and then repeated ad naseum until the end.

Just read the author's bio and the book's publishing credentials, and I feel kinda conflicted about my review. To an aspiring writer after having read his first novel, I would say, ok, not bad. You did better than I could have done. But, this book's 4.5-star overall rating set my expectations way too high, and I'm posting this review and rating so that other potential readers should know to expect more of a 3-star reading experience. Mostly, I'm bitter at having used up my one free book a month from the kindle lending library on this book.

If I had gotten to that level of detail prior to borrowing the book from the lending library, maybe my expectations wouldn't have been so high. But I'm also not sure that information was readily available while browsing on my kindle.

This is my first read of an independently published book, and I wonder, do I need to recalibrate my expectations for books like this? Is a 4.5 for a book published by Del Rey or Tor the same as a 4.5 for a book published by CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform? Should it be?
