Hello Friends, first a notice to the hard boiled Dr Siri-Fans - look out, bite Your nails, have a bit of Asian patience... Dr Siri is coming back in the autumn.

And now, me - a hard boiled Dr Siri Fan myself - noticed with a bit of anxiety that our Most Famous Laotian Crime's-Writer has fallen into the Honeytrap of - rural Thailand!!!

But like every good Crime's-Writer, he is able to create for us an entirely new Universe, the World of the Juree Family.

Jimm Juree, thirty-something Crime Reporter is trasplanted by the (higher) force of her a-little-bit-out-of-the-road Mair (Mum), together with her brother Body-Builder with serious problems to connect to the other sex, a Grand-Pa ex Street-Police in semi-permanent mental absence, but full of resources....
And they all are forced from Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand to rural Southern Costal Thailand, to a very well existing place called Pak Nam (to be found on Google Maps!!!) to make what????
Mair has bought a "beautiful, calm Seaside Resort" on the Gulf of Siam, and they all will run it with the United Forces of the Family!
Yet one member is missing, staying in the North - the former elder brother, now after the "Great Snip" an "Auntie", ex Miss Thay, Asia, Frisco World of Transgender etc., but in Midlife Crisis because of ... read and learn!

Mix into t h a t mix the find of two skeletons in a VW-Mini-Bus, plus a murder case following right up behind, a Police Officer openly gay (an apparently non-existent phenomenon in the Thai Police ;-))) and several other murder cases coming up in more distant places of the Globe - and You have a plot that I had to read in one rush!
The dialogs are some times juvenile, gayish, even 70T-ish, when the plot requests it, but most of the time the writing stucks to the crime (He,He...)

O.K., I have to admit that the G.W.Bush citations above every chapter made it much more difficult to continue the read (almost-dying of laughter, no-understand-frown or so..) but once You have captured the non-sense, it comes like a bullet hitting You and You only want to cry.....

For my opinion (which doesn't count soo muchat all) it is a great gain to read this last born in the family of our C.C., because it has all the wits and finds and lacks of our current Century or Millennium, or whatstheheck..in it.

Try it out - You will never regret it!

Big city crime journalist Jimm Juree moves with her family to a tiny rural village in Thailand, where nothing ever happens and her journalistic career is practically over. All of this changes suddenly when several dead bodies show up in the village... In part, this novel is about the ensuing criminal investigation of a very surreal murder (no further spoilers here). Equally, however, it is the story of Jimm Juree's unconventional family - her ex-hippie, unpredictable mother, her computer-hacking-genius transgender sister, her brother the over-emotional bodybuilder, and her grumpy old grandfather - and their struggle for a normal family life. Initially, I found this side story kind of distracting, but after a while Jimm's family really started to grow on me, and I looked forward to finding out what happened to them as much as what happened to the murder investigation. The writing is not exactly Shakespeare, but it fits very well with the quirkiness and the humor of the content. As long as you are not expecting a serious detective novel, this book makes for a very enjoyable read!

Thai mysteries 30. Januar 2012
Format:Taschenbuch
Welcome to the other side of the Mekong River, where we find out that Thailand has a rather impressive collection of not-quite-average inhabitants as well. They are fun (a body-building virginal brother, a definitely not virginal sister that used to be a brother, a mother shuttling easily between sharp as a knife and the first signs of Alzheimer's, a comatose but really quick grandfather and a gay police man), but they can't hold a candle to Dr. Siri and his outlandish crew. The absence of an oppressive and paranoid system is the novel's biggest problem. A basically well-off and stable country doesn't create poignant wit, acerbic irony and absurd administrative loops, nor do its inhabitants writhe in the deadlock grip of despair and hate mingled with love and hope. The heroine Jimm has everythign at her disposal, most importantly one of the world's best hackers, which means that she doesn't have to build her case from the almost-nothings that Dr. Siri did so well with. It's an enjoyable read, yes, but not nearly as memorable as the adventures of her Lao predecessors.
