Once the precipitant of Gary Hart's political downfall, Hughes is now an antipornography crusader. She teams with Christian journalist Campbell to produce a parents' guide to guarding children against hard-core porn on the Internet and pedophilic spiders on the World Wide Web. It is packed with argument and advice, the former even-tempered, though ill-supported by some weak references, and the latter emphasizing parental responsibility and trusting, tender parent-child relations. Hughes and Campbell urge parents to become computer literate, create guidelines for home use of the Net and the Web, and stock a software "toolbox" for blocking, filtering, and customizing cyberspace access. More controversially, they recommend ascertaining whether schools and public libraries are protecting kids from Net porn and, if not, seeing that they do. They realize that First Amendment stalwarts' feathers may be ruffled (they treat ALA and ACLU positions respectfully, though), and also that better law enforcement and the revival of the judicially approved concept of community standards for obscenity would effect much of the protection they seek. Kids Online is packed with useful information and advice. No parent should let his or her child go on on-line without reading this book.
