My clinics are full of children with constipation - often parents don't even know their kids HAVE constipation. Don't let it keep going on and on - the longer it goes on, the more difficult it is to treat - and the longer it takes.

Impacted bowels are literally everywhere. It certainly seems like it in the average Paediatric clinic. That does of course mean that you are not alone in struggling. Look inside the book cover on your left to get a taster, not just of the facts - that would be mean! - but of my tone. It's supportive and lays no blame. No blame because there isn't any - and I'll bet that sounds tempting! Take a long deep breath of relief and then let's get to work understanding and beating it. You'll probably find that your adult family and friends will really benefit from much of the same advice.

This information is based on my 20 years working as a Paediatrician. 20 years! It's taken me a long time to figure it all, so why shouldn't you reap the benefits? Yes you!

It's not just a shoulder to cry on though. You can get to grips with this and get relief. Constipation is a bit like simple plumbing. Even the meds and how they work will make sense. Let me tell you a medication regime can be right for everyday because we do different things, eat different things, have different weather, do more (or less!) exercise on different days. How can you adjust the meds if you're not armed with the info and power to do that.

Children's constipation is misery. - in fact ANYBODY'S severe constipation is misery! Often what people think is long-standing IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is constipation - in adults as much as children. Even babies (infants) get it. Most babies strain, but sometimes a lifetime of severe constipation starts right there. Parents often feel powerless when their children suffer from constipation - or worse, guilty. They shouldn't. You shouldn't. Understand it and beat it! Let me help you get there....Again look inside the cover for a flavour.

What exactly is constipation, and what causes it? What symptoms are there in children's constipation? Did you know that liquid poo, poop, or stools can be a sign of severe constipation. If the liquid leaks (soiling), we call it overflow. So let me help you get the rocks moving and stem the flow of the deluge of fluid.

Ok, you've probably been through it already, and you might even be losing hope. Your whole family is probably down and a bit obsessed with your wee one's poo-ing. It doesn't have to be like that. Constipation relief is possible. This is not a book about laxatives - though it will help you get to grips with them. It will help you look at diet (and more importantly fluid). It will help you understand why your child won't take the fruit and veg you offer just wanting bread and pasta. Once you're bunged up, extra fibre just causes pain, and simple white carbs don't leave much residue to add to it. It will help explain the issues with milk (and why I think milk is great), and with apple juice which surprisingly can cause constipation.

So what remedies are there? Well it's not just the stool softeners (lactulose and the like). There is a big group of what are called macrogyols (Movicol, Laxido and others) a group of starches which mix to make heavy water which hang on to water so that it reaches the bottom end. Then there's the 'pushers' - senna, picosulphate and others. There are even ayurvedic remedies such as triphala.

So come on, read the blurb, then download and crack on. I'll be there holding your hand, with soothing words as we go along. Good luck and let's get started!

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book!! if your wee one is just 'off colour', or maybe he/she (or you) get bunged up from time to time!! Act now - don't hang about. 18 months ago I had no idea what 'constipation' truly meant, and impact it can have on a child. Do take a look at this book. I truly wish it had been around years (decades) ago. It could have saved a lot of grief, but life is about learning.

This book was an eye opener as to how lousy a child can feel when constipated, the impact it has on all aspects of their life, as well as family. What comes across is Dr Gardner's compassion and deep understanding of how painful it can be (something that is rarely acknowledged.) No wonder the child doesn't want to go! Also that it is something that must be taken seriously and dealt with effectively. It is not something that just goes away. The consequences of not acting can be lifelong. (In my personal experience).

We live in a blame society. We/the child/something must be to blame for the child 'getting constipated'. 'Soiling' and/or 'wetting' must be due to behaviour? Dr Gardner clearly explains how it can happen to anyone. She has the art of explaining the technicalities of 'how you poop' in a way that is easy to understand, also how to spot when things are going wrong.
The explanation as to why it takes so long to resolve, and the need to persevere with medication and other lifestyle strategies are very clear.
Her explanations of how the most popular medications work are really helpful.

THE BIGGEST SELLING POINTS: Dr Gardner's book offers the parent/child the tools of understanding, so they can tackle the problem and compassionate support that though not easy it is possible!
The important message that comes across is that her book is a useful tool to understanding, but does not replace the need for a child to see their own medic. However, constipation is poorly understood.. so the book is really great for giving a struggling parent confidence to persevere!
