My wife and I never dreamed that our children would someday graduate from prestigious schools such as MIT, Harvard University, the University of Cambridge and Tufts University. Both of my daughters were class presidents of their universities. My children’s high academic achievements and strong character development happened not by coincidence. It has been hard work for everyone in the family.

In this book, the reader will find numerous stories about things that have worked in my family and mistakes that I have made during the different stages of bringing up my children.

This book is more about parenting than about preparing our children for prestigious schools. My belief is that if children develop strong personal values and communication skills, higher academic achievements will naturally follow.

This book is not just for parents. In fact, many ideas are equally useful to children as well. My younger daughter once commented, “Having the right attitude is important. I can't pinpoint what specific things you and Mom have done to give us (our children) this mind-set, but for all three of us, we always want to do better. We always think we can learn more or be more accomplished than we already are, and that's great.”

This book is not about fast-tracking educational advancement. Rather, it is about the balanced development of a child’s preparation for the real world and the building of family relationships that are strong and sustainable for a life-time.

A friend of mine, Mr. Klingman, once reminded me of a belief from a university professor, “The goal of education is not knowledge but actions.” I am totally convinced by the professor’s belief. I hope that every reader will be motivated by this book to do at least one thing differently to enhance their family relationships and to better prepare their children to strive in the society.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Dr. Addons Wu is the proud father of three great children. Similar to other working couples, Addons and his wife have lived through the fun yet demanding and occasionally exhausting days stressing over how to raise their kids well.

Addons' professional career immersed him in different cultures across the globe: he's lived for many years in the UK, Canada, the US, China, and South Korea. Though each country has its own unique culture, Addons has come to believe that there are fundamental principles of raising children that are universally true.

For example, focusing on character development and maintaining a strong connection with his children are two of the many important elements of raising his children who have graduated from MIT, Harvard University, Tufts University and the University of Cambridge.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A great book about philosophy on harmonious family and model parents, and how it positively influences kids to be successful. 17. März 2013

Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
In nowadays high competitive society, as a father of a 4 year old, I try to spend most after work time with my son on the stuff that I think is meaningful for his growth and intellectual development such as guiding him through the pre-school exercise books on mathematics, English and drawing etc. Like most parents, I'm struggling with how to teach him the knowledge that he needs to succeed in the future without ruining his childhood with overloaded studies. Sometime I feel guilty that I'm getting further away from my original wishes that I just want him to be a good person who has a happy and healthy life. Now, the philosophy from this book makes me rethink what I'm doing, I'm convinced that developing an understanding of the right values and instilling discipline is more important, which will help my son organize his behavior himself to pursue the core capabilities for a good life. Academics are just one of those capabilities. I enjoyed reading the stories about life lessons from the book and how the kids are guided with open but purposeful conversation. Somehow I hope the book can provide even more examples on building respect and parental authority, which is the foundation of maintaining family rules, and have kid follow the advice and guidance.

After reading this book, I had a conversation with my wife who was at the same time reading another book about how children succeed. That book somehow proved the similar philosophy by a lot of studies carried out in the past decades by some prestigious universities' psychologists and professors. Both two books have told us a truth that parents play most important roles in children's growth and development. We are lucky to have access to all such knowledge and experience written in books and will definitely adopt in our family.

Overall, I like the wisdom and the life lessons from this book on establishing harmonious and balanced parent-children relationship, which is more practical and I believe it will help us to build the foundation for happy life and ground for raising successful kids.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Not a book but wisdom about how to have a happy family and brilliant children 4. März 2013
Von Eric - Veröffentlicht auf
I first got to know Addons 12 years ago when I joined General Motors and have been working with him ever since. He is proud of his children ... no, let me put it this way - he does have three brilliant children (graduated from MIT, Harvard and Cambridge) he could be proud of. Addons is a great coach and mentor. When we chat, he shares with us a lot of his unique insights, observation and experience in developing his children and preparing them for the future competition. I especially like his comments that every kid was a born genius. What parents need to do is to help them build the foundation, and the results then will naturally come. He also shared with us how much fun he has with his family.

Addons has been working on this book for a while. I'm sure every reader will benefit from his wisdom and advices.
I will get my delivery next week - cannot wait...!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Very instructive book 11. März 2013

Just had some time during weekend to read, although not finish the whole book. Many wisdoms are shared through daily life which i always had many questions marks. I once asked the author about those questions, Addons can always give me som good answers by using his own experience and from the book i found many of them are more vivid and easier for parents to understand. This is a very inspring and instructive book, especially when i face my 3 kids and get impatient for all the chaos they have made.

As i also chatted with my wife about the book, we all agreed it's not the reason why Addons' children have made great academic accomplishmet which has driven us so interested in the book, but because of the reason Addons mentioned: personal values and communications skills are more important, acamedic scores will become good naturally when the earlier two are good. My elder son is joing elementary school this year , this is a real in-time book for us to re-consider our attitude towards his acamedics as well as his other characters and skills.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Couldn't stop reading this book! Incredible advice and inspirational stories made it a joy to read. 24. April 2013
Von Ashley - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
I wish I had found this book earlier! With a 3 year old daughter, it's difficult to find time to read... but this book was incredible! The book is divided into many short chapters, each with interesting anecdotes and the author's personal experiences.

It's given me so much insight into how I want to raise my daughter. I want to inspire her to succeed academically, but most importantly, I want to raise her to have good values and become a positive influence in our community. The author provides so much advice on inspiring your kids to succeed in life, yet he reminds us that your relationship with your spouse is and should be my #1 priority. Needless to say, I LOVED this book. I loved his inspirational personal stories, his valuable advice, and his honesty. I will definitely be recommending this book to my other mommy friends!
5.0 von 5 Sternen Grow with kids- some thought after reading this book 13. Juni 2013
Von Sean Zhang - Veröffentlicht auf
I spent nearly two weeks to finish the book. Be honestly, I admire Addons's wisdom to raise three successful kids. Not only because all of them come into the top level university, but also they are excel person with the good humanity and character. The readers can find the philosophy of education from not only west but also east. As the author think, the success will come naturally when one person has a good personality. I very agree.
As the title, kids come second, it tell me that we must grow ourselves firstly. As the parents, you must have the health attitude with your spouse, with your parents, generally speaking, have a positive human life yourself. Then it impacts your kids imperceptibly. It is important be a good idol for your kids and growing with them.
I think this is a very good book, I recommend it to my friends. And I also believe the reads can be nourished from Addons's wisdom and life experience.
