One Tough Kid

Mark Thornton's first book, Kid Moses, is a very good story well told. It is the mesmerizing tale - at once harrowing and hopeful - of modern Africa seen through the eyes of Moses, a street child who spends day and night trying to survive the mean streets of the slums of Dar es Salaam and the starkly beautiful, but dangerous, world of the African bush. He finds people at their best and worst, some surprisingly caring, others brutal: a nurturing prostitute, a heartless bully, a selfless guide. An encounter with a deadly snake is a chilling reminder that Moses inhabits an untamed place where death can come quickly to the unwary. His is a world of predator and prey, but against long odds Moses is a survivor and he emerges as an engaging character about whom we care. Highly recommended.
A young kid with an old soul....

I read this book in one sitting because I could not put it down. Whether you have been to Africa or not, you will find the story of Kid Moses galvanizing...both in the slums of Dar es Sallaam and the depths of the Tanzanian wilderness. In many ways the book is a coming of age story for 11 year old Kid Moses who successfully lives by his wits in the city but almost dies in the wilderness. I have been to several large cities in Africa and recognize the description of Kid Moses as a street urchin but now will see these street kids differently because Mark Thornton (the author) has created a character with a soul. Only someone like Mark who has lived and worked in the African wilderness could transport a reader to the poignant realities of life in the jungle. Kid Moses will live on for a long time in my memory. Thanks for the gift, Mark.

I absolutely LOVED this book. I highly recommend it. The settings are illustrated so beautifully in the text, with rich character development.
