The death of the fearsome Ögedei Khan has brought the Mongol invasion of the West to an abrupt halt. Exhausted, plagued by uncertainty and self-doubt, and reeling from betrayal by one of their own, the surviving Shield-Brethren struggle across a frozen, shattered wasteland to return home after their desperate battle in Mongolia.

Their mission is complete—Christendom has been saved—but new and terrible questions haunt each member of the company: Are they heroes or villains? Or just pawns in a larger game, trapped in a world gone mad in the wake of the unspeakable devastation visited upon it by the Mongol horde?

And most poignant of all, where—and what—is “home” now, and what will be their place in the world they fought to defend?

Katabasis, a new novel in the acclaimed Foreworld Saga, follows the survivors as they struggle to confront their own fears and decide who they truly are—and whom they will ultimately serve.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A fine finish to a great saga! 7. April 2014

A very satisfying read, tying up all those loose ends that remained at the end of The Mongoliad Book 3.

4.0 von 5 Sternen There and back again. 15. November 2013

I took a long break while I was reading book three I'm the series, I think because of the Rome chapters. I didn't know until the end of that book that there was going to be a fourth. Luckily for me, I finished reading the third a day before this one, Katabasis, was released. This time, the reading kept me engaged through the entire book.

I particularly enjoy the technicality of the fighting and the descriptions of the tactics. Also, considering how many authors are working on the books, it never feels like a hodge podge of clashing styles.

After the first three which were quite good, this one is less exciting. There characterization really faltered, but it remains an okay read and one you will want to read after the previous ones.

Loved this series! Hate to see it end. As always enough people left to take this in many different directions if desired. Well worth the wait.
4.0 von 5 Sternen Epic medieval history continues with the Northern Crusade against Alexander Nevsky 3. September 2014

Format:Taschenbuch|Vine Kundenrezension eines kostenfreien Produkts (Was ist das?)
This is the fourth volume in the Foreworld Saga and continues from where Mongoliad volume 3 left off. In volume 3, two new popes (one real, one fictitious) were elected in Rome and the Shield Brethren were everywhere from winning an improbable victory against the knights of Livonia and the corrupt Kristaps to assassinating Ogedai Khan near Karakorum during one of his drunken hunting trips.

The shield brethren are mostly fleeing from Karakorum back West with the concubine Lian and avoiding pursuit by various Mongol characters including Gansukh and Alchiq. Of course, most of Batu Khan's Golden Horde are actually withdrawing from Europe as they head back to Karakorum to elect a new Khan.

Kristaps now continues the "Northern Crusade" by joining his Livonian knights with the Teutonic knights. There he is destined to meet Alexander Nevsky and his druzhini (literally friends - a personal household cavalry) in a battle on an icy lake that might even be worthy of immortalization in film.(oh wait - Sergei Eisenstein already did that). Illaryon Illarryonovich is closely assisting Nevsky.

Pretty much all the surviving characters from Volume 3 are here. Noble and valiant Percival and Gawain, mysterious Feronantus, stink bomb creating alchemist Yasper - not to mention assorted shield maidens and binders.

Only 3 of the original writers of the Mongoliad remain as two Bears and a Stevenson have departed. The writing remains episodic, engaging and lively. I only started reading this series at volume 3 and had little trouble getting caught up in it at that stage. I think newcomers could likewise start with this volume if they chose to.
4.0 von 5 Sternen katabasis; pulls together the myriad threads of the Mongoliad Cycle. 21. Juli 2014
Von Ken Deck - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Following in the well written form established in the previous books of the Mongoliad Cycle, Katabasis flows across across the land, always pulling our our imagination and wonder to new levels without stepping beyond the edge of what might be plausible. (If you have not read the previous books of the "cycle", you will find this book all the more enjoyable by reading them before diving deeply into this adventure tome.)
You will invariably find yourself holding your breath as this saga brings resolution to story lines that have left hanging while providing unexpected twists and changes in the outcome you may have expected.
This book does not disappoint. A very good read that has kept me up long after I intended to be in bed, all without regrets.
