NEW: NOW WITH STROKE ORDER and FLASHCARDS (at the end of the ebook)!

For Beginners of the Japanese language. Includes FREE MP3s (download link found on the last page)

Learning kanji--those thousands of characters originally from Chinese--can be a rewarding experience. Japanese as a foreign language not dependant on the alphabet is often seen as exotic and "cool" to the English speaker. It certainly is, and kanji is at the heart of this appeal.

This ebook will guide you through the first and most important hundred kanji. In a very real sense more difficult kanji build from this foundation. Learning these first hundred kanji well will greatly help your Japanese in the future. Yes, this is true even if your main goal is conversational Japanese.

Learn the most common readings, useful example jukugo (kanji combinations), and understand usage with an example sentence for each kanji. Best of all, download the 100 sound files from our server and listen while you learn. We are also including a PDF version in the download so you can optionally study from your computer as well.

  • 100 essential kanji
  • FREE MP3s of all the readings and examples found in the eBook
  • Mnemonic and helpful comments throughout
  • Every kanji has its correct stroke order shown
  • Each kanji has multiple examples and an example sentence showing usage

...100 sehr nützliche Kanjis. Das Buch war eine gute Ergänzung zu den Standard-Lernmaterialien (Kursbuch, Wörterbücher etc.) und eine gute Vorbereitung für meine erste Reise nach Japan.

3.0 von 5 Sternen No stroke order 29. Januar 2012
Von So Journey - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
As an avid language learner, I am constantly looking for language instruction books on Kindle. Carrying around loads of language books is a huge inconvenience, and it would be great if I could store all of them on my one-pound device.

I'm currently taking Japanese classes and was anxious to find a book of Japanese Kanji for my Kindle. The only Kindle options besides this one appeared to be Kanji for Manga. Not really my thing. This looked like a good option and the price was certainly right.

The choice of Kanji is OK, certainly for beginners. However, since this is a book marketed towards beginners, I thought it was a glaring oversight that they don't include the stroke order! What makes this even more glaring is that there's a small section at the beginning about how important stroke order is, but it's nothing more than very general rules. This might seem like a small thing, but given that even the book itself acknowledges how important stroke order is to writing Kanji, it seems like a careless omission.

I ended up returning the book. Until there is a more comprehensive Kanji guide for Kindle, I suppose I will have to stick with physical books.

UPDATE: It appears that the seller has included the stroke order in its latest edition in response to criticism from me and another reviewer. I haven't had the chance to review the new product, and frankly might not buy it because I don't have a need for it right now, but I do think the response warrants mention as it is a good sign of customer service.

3.0 von 5 Sternen In Urgent need of quality control - updated review 5. April 2012

1. Yes, they did a good job at picking popular and useful Kanjis.

2. Thank you for the ON and KON spellings for the Kanjis and the useful compound concepts using the Kanji - very useful indeed!

3. I haven't downloaded the sound files, but I intend to, I find this a value-added feature for sure.

4. Price is right!

Recommended improvements:

1. C'mon, it's a digital product, so it's not like your waisting paper, take some pride in the Kanjis and make them larger, the main ones plus the ones in the sample themes.. you're already dedicating a page to each one. give it the prominent size it deserves.

2. Impress us by including stroke order... take some pride in your work authors

3. PROOF READ! No 73 has the same meaning as No 72 i.e. to listen, ask, when it probably should be "to eat", this tells me no authors or editors reviewed the work, and this gives me less confidence in the accuracy.

4. PROOF READ! No 68 has the same meaning as No 67, this is getting old authors, take some pride in your work. These digital products, I suppose because of their ease in publishing makes the authors think they don't have to review and quality check their work. I can't believe that as someone who has just spent 3 weeks leaning basic japanese from scratch, that I am catching these overt mistakes... Now I have little confidence in the rest. Authors: TIP, Proof-read!!!

Fix these issues and take your product from a C- to an A

Update: The author has left a comment indicating tha he will review and correct any issues on the next release; in my opinion this positive attitude by the author deserves acknowledgement; accordingly I've upgraded the rating. If the reviewed product addresses (most) of the issues above, I would consider buying a volume 2.

There's a lot to like in this this book and in the authors' track record of product support and personal response to reviews. I like the 100 set idea- gives you some idea of what you're starting to grapple with. (If it is correct that basic Japanese comprises about 2,000 kanji, mastery of these first 100 gets us 5% of the way to rudimentary's a start.....)

This is an update of my earlier review. The authors have added the electronic kanji flashcards at the back of the book that were previously discussed. They look very usable to me. (The flash cards don't, as yet, show up in the Table of Contents.)

Boutwells, if you want to gild the lily, I concur with an earlier reviewer that the On, Kun, and Meaning entries for each kanji in the body of the book are quite small and making these characters larger would be welcomed by many of us. " Examples" look to be very helpful (am counting on Yumi Boutwell to be a native speaker who can be relied on; at present, my own Japanese would qualify as an uninformed opinion) .

I was able to download the free MP3s to my iMac without trouble, and these sound good. They should help with memorization of each kanji. I find the mnemonics given for each kanji to be mostly unhelpful (this looks to me to be a universal problem in all the mnemonics I have seen for kana and kanji. I'm guessing that he spoken-word recordings may prove more helpful to the memorization process.)

Now I need to get a little sketchbook to practice writing kanji- an exciting prospect !

Thank you, Boutwells, for this book and for your superb customer and product support.

I should have bought this book a long time ago. I have been studying Japanese informally for a long time, and this book is improving my knowledge by leaps and bounds. I would recommend it to anyone who has decided to get serious about studying Japanese. It gives clear and simple instructions on how to write and read all the one hundred characters in the book.
