Der großartige Dennis Scheck von der noch großartigeren ARD-Sendung „Druckfrisch" hat letztens gesagt, daß Michael Crichton der Jules Verne von heute sei. Das stimmt. Ich möchte allerdings ergänzen, daß Crichtons Bücher weit besser recherchiert erscheinen, als Vernes Geschichten. Beide haben großartige Bücher geschrieben, in denen Wissenschaft und Unterhaltung perfekt verschmelzen. Der Roman „Jurassic Park" ist der gleichnamigen Verfilmung von Steven Spielberg sehr ähnlich, enthält nur kleinere Abweichungen, etwa eine Szene mit Flugsaurieren und hat den Enkeln des Multimillionärs Hammond, dem Besitzer des Saurier-Parks, andere Charaktereigenschaften zugeordnet. Das Ansehen von Crichtons Dino-Geschichte hat etwas unter den zwei Fortsetzungen gelitten, finde ich. Wirklich interessant ist nur dieser erste Teil. Was würde passieren, wenn die Gentechnik so weit fortgeschritten wäre, daß Dinosaurier wieder zum Leben erweckt werden könnten? Man würde die neue Technologie bis zum letzten Tropfen kommerziell ausnutzen und aus Profitgier vorschnell gentechnisch erzeugte Lebewesen züchten, mit katastrophalen Auswirkungen auf das Ökosystem, das ist die Erkenntnis dieses Romans. Seriöse Wissenschaftler beschäftigen sich momentan wohl eher mit gentechnisch verändertem Getreide. Nicht gerade ein Thema für einen Thriller. Bei Crichton sind es Dinosaurier, was sicherlich weniger realistisch aber äußerst spannend und unterhaltsam ist. So gibt es aktuelles Wissen über gleich zwei Themen zu lernen: Paläontologie und Gentechnik.
„Jurassic Park" ist eine sehr gekonnt erzählte Geschichte über einer der wichtigsten Erfindungen der Menschheit, der Gentechnik. Ein Buch das sowohl neugierig macht, auf eine tiefergehende Beschäftigung mit der Materie und darüber hinaus äußerst unterhaltsam ist. So sieht intelligente Unterhaltung aus!

I absolutely loved this book! I read it in two days. It had tons of action and it also had an intellectual part to it that the movie did not have. The beginning of it was really great and i learned a little about costa rica. There were also many other things that happened in the book that never happened in the movie.The ending was also different too. Ian Malcom's quips and witty remark's were very entertaining and humorous. the book is 10 times better than the movie.

I read this book shortly before the movie was released. Boy am I glad I did; the movie didn't do Crichton's brilliant work justice.
My mind painted vivid pictures to accompany Crichton's masterful words. My imagination went wild: I was IN Jurassic Park. And I was both scared to death and enthralled with my unbelievable surroundings. I felt the adventure and the fear. I held my breath as I turned page after page.
The only disappointment was the ending. It was so...well, unresolved. He set this up a little too obviously for a sequel.
Within a week of reading the book, I saw the movie. I was sorely disappointed, but it was inevitable. Crichton's characters and scenery are just too rich to be adequately presented by Hollywood. And that's pretty amazing in itself. (Don't get me wrong - the movie was great, but not in comparison to the book.)
Do yourself a favor and read this book. Let your imagination take you to a place far, far away. A beautiful and terrifying place where one man's vision goes terribly wrong....
