5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent short story 23. August 2012
Von Howbuck - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
This story is set in the newspaper publishing world of the 1970's but it has a contemporary feel as well. Alan is a young reporter working on a Sunday tabloid in Fleet Street when it was the location of the newspaper industry in London. He
experiences a whole range of emotions during one challenging day at the office. This is an excellent short story which demonstrates the ability of the writer not only to tell a good tale but also to handle time and characterisation really well. The characters are interesting and engaging and the story has several twists before it gets to an unexpected ending. Excellent value and highly recommended.
4.0 von 5 Sternen Good story - unsatisfying end 10. August 2013

This story charts the beginning of the journalistic career of Alan, the main protagonist. The writing style is immediate and engaging and it's easy to feel you are there in the Fleet Street days with the smoky rooms and long lunchtime pub meetings. I loved the way the story unfolded gradually. We learnt about people a little at a time and it kept pulling me in just that little bit more.

I felt the ending was abrupt and unsatisfying. I think I know what Alan meant but to mention it would be a spoiler. However, it dropped from the blue (although one could piece together a clue - but it's less than satisfactory). I was also unhappy that the story ended at 86% of the book. I really dislike `free chapters' of another book. I have no problem with a short story being short. I hate it padded out. A link is fine.
That sounds like a list of complaints doesn't it? I did enjoy the book though. It's a great read but I felt it could have been even better.
4.0 von 5 Sternen Murky twists and turns 6. März 2013
Von M. Brookes - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
Julia's Room is the story of a young reporter in Fleet Street during the sixties. The tale wraps around a young lady (the aforementioned Julia) and does a good job of portraying the murkiness of the job.

I enjoyed the story, the writing is good, although I was a little perplexed by the ending. It was very abrupt and left me with the feeling that I had missed something. Still, the journey was good, so it's a minor complaint.

A recommended read.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Gripping account of Fleet Street journalism 20. Januar 2013
Von Jonnyboy (Jonathan) - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
This novella firmly held my attention from start to finish. Straightaway it plunges the reader into the murky world of journalism in the 70s. We follow Alan over a hellish Monday, root for him to meet deadlines and watch as he discovers the secrets of current and former colleagues. It's very well-written and, for something that might first appear mundane, gripping to the very end. The book's style reminded me of the great American novel 'Revolutionary Road'. In both books, the dialogue is extremely convincing and at times crackles with electricity. Here, in Alan's world, not everything is as it seems. Even now I have finished the book, it is not entirely clear to me who knows what. This is a fitting way to leave the characters though. It surely reflects the murkiness of newspaper journalism at the time. Highly recommended. 5/5

I couldn't put this down. A wonderful novella. The author takes you through the Fleet Street days of the "print" and if you know London, you journey beside Alan, the rookie reporter. Highly recommend.
