This is a very slim but good sized paperback (10" x 9") of 60 (yes 60) pages. There is a brief introduction by John Russell Taylor followed by a conversation between the artist and Javier Mazorra; the text is printed side by side in English and Spanish. The plates commence on page 13, and the book concludes with a page providing very brief bio-facts and lists of exhibitions.
The introduction provides only a little information about this Spanish born (1948) artist now working in Edinburgh, and discusses his work only in very general terms. In the conversation only the artist's work is discussed. The book is well illustrated with 54 images including the cover, all but ten in full colour, some of the ten in black and white are pencil drawings. They are for the most part full page, although that is not to say that they fill the page, in fact many could have been reproduced larger. In a just a few instances there are two images to a page.
Roberto Fernandez-Gonzalez is a realist artist, some might say super-real or even at times surreal; yet his work is sensitive, subtle, atmospheric and certainly exquisitely executed. His subject matter is almost exclusively male and unquestionably gay; the images are often sensual, suggestive or provocative. It is good to have his work available in this form, but it would have been even better if the book had been more revealing about the artist himself.
