Über den Autor
Tony Blair, geboren 1953 in Edinburgh, wurde 1983 Abgeordneter des britischen Unterhauses für die Labour Party, deren Führung er 1994 übernahm. Von Mai 1997 bis Juni 2007 war er britischer Premierminister. Seither ist er der Sondergesandte des Nahost-Quartetts, er hat gemeinnützige Organisationen ins Leben gerufen, um einen interreligiösen Aktionsplan und Führungsleitlinien in Afrika voranzubringen, und bemüht sich um Lösungsansätze zum Problem des Klimawandels. Blair ist verheiratet mit Cherie Booth und Vater von vier gemeinsamen Kindern.

Sicherlich sind wichtige Persönlichkeiten in ihren Autobiographien geneigt, ein relevantes Maß an Geschichtsrevisionismus an den Tag zu legen, gerade dann, wenn es sich um führende Gestalten des internationalen Geschehens handelt. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist es Tony Blair in keiner Weise zu verdenken, wenn er seine Sicht der Dinge in diesem umfangreichen Werk zusammenfasst, auch wenn diese nicht mit den gängigen Bildern der interessierten Öffentlichkeit übereinstimmen. Die letzte Abwägung der vielleicht gegensätzlichen Argumente bleibt ohnedies der wissenschaftlich begründeten Aufarbeitung überlassen.
Jedenfalls ist dieses Buch sehr gut in der Lage, einen Einblick in das Wirken eines Prime Ministers zu gewähren. Mit oftmals beträchtlicher Selbstironie und zuweilen durchaus kritischer Betrachtung des eigenen Handelns führt Blair durch die Fährnisse der britischen Innenpolitik wie auch durch die komplexen Beziehungen der internationalen Politik. New Labour, die langwierige Auseinandersetzung (im neutralen wie auch im negativen Sinne des Wortes) mit Gordon Brown, der Krieg im Irak und dabei das Zusammenwirken mit George Bush sind nur einige wenige der Themen.

As quite a few reviewers here have noted it is not easy if not impossible to review this book properly. The dividing moment of Tony Blair's career remains the Iraq war and those who opposed it will find this book utter rubbish, whereas the supporters of the war would presumably recommend Blair for the Nobel in Literature. I shall do neither.
What I loved about this book is the witty style it is written in. Politicians' memoirs often read like a speech or old-fashioned prose. This one doesn't. Blair uses the every-day language most of us would use in describing matters. What I also liked - at least in the beginning - is that his memoir is written thematically and not in chronological order. He actually starts off doing that but then more and more often succumbs to the habit of all political memoirs to have to tell everything even if it is not relevant to a particular theme.
The Iraq war is covered in quite some detail and Yes even Tony Blair has noticed by now that it is not a terribly popular affair. What I didn't like about these three chapters is how defensively he re-states his case for going to war and removing Hussein. It can make quite tedious reading and because of that I skipped quite a bit. His description of George W. Bush I found rather hilarious because if the guy really is how Blair describes him, then he should have projected his image in a better manner, than he did.
These are the things which really stand out. As you read the book you will notice that the driving power behind Blair is his `New Labour' ideology and that his drive is more akin to Margaret Thatcher than to any of his Labour predecessors.
All told I found this a fascinating piece of recent history.

Former British prime minister Tony Blair's memoir "A Journey: My Political Life" is a political biography of unusual interest. Clearly the most dominant figure in Britain's politics for the past 20 years Blair came to the fore as leader of the Labour Party in 1994, and served as prime minister from 1997 - 2007. These years saw him deal with the devastation of Princess Diana's death, peace negotiations in Northern Ireland, enormous public service reforms, and war - Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, Iraq. Here is a journal of those years in his own words.
Blair has donated all proceeds from this book to charity for wounded British military veterans. And, in his memoir he ruminates about whether or not his decisions to engage in war were wise. He delivers more than a convincing defense of his actions. Further, he expresses admiration and respect for recent American presidents, including Obama, and notes that in visiting our shores during the ten years he served as prime minister he came to love America.
It is rare that one is offered such a close look at history as seen through the eyes of an important participant. Deprecating at times his writing seems devoid of artifice, but simply a desire to tell it as it was. Speaking of telling it's an immense pleasure to listen to it read in Blair's own voice.
