From Booklist

This first biography of the late Joseph Papp will be a hard act to follow. Epstein, who collaborated with Papp on an earlier attempt to tell the theatrical impresario's story, had access to Papp's papers, his family, friends, enemies, and business associates. A man of many contradictions, one who invented and reinvented himself, Papp was a tough kid from Brooklyn. His street-learned business sense would enable him to sift the gold from the glitter of Michael Bennett's A Chorus Line, and his early exposure to Hamlet would lead to the founding of the New York Shakespeare Festival. Epstein recounts these and other triumphs in detail, providing fascinating background on the plays, the theaters, the actors and directors, the political battles, the hits and misses. She also does a remarkably balanced job of describing Papp's not-so-nice private life, his wives and lovers, and his difficult relationships with his children. Was Papp a prodigiously creative cultural entrepreneur . . . a contemporary Robin Hood who stole art from the rich and gave it to the poor, or was he, as critic John Simon argues, a man with vulgar . . . notions of what culture is? Epstein manages to show that he was all of the above. And more. Ron Antonucci

From Kirkus Reviews

A sympathetic biography of the legendary New Yorkbased theater producer, who died in 1991. Epstein (Music Talks, 1987, etc.) was a close friend of Papp's; although she makes an attempt to be evenhanded, she admits that this is a ``friendly'' biography. Born Yussel Papirofsky in Brooklyn, Papp discovered the allure of the theater while putting on amateur shows in the Army. He joined the fledgling West coastbased Actors' Laboratory after WW II and then moved to New York, where he worked as a stage manager at CBS. Meanwhile, he founded his New York Shakespeare Festival and, working out of a tiny Lower East Side church, vowed to bring the Bard's works to the masses through touring productions in the city's parks. Papp's first great battle was fought with New York Parks Commissioner Robert Moses, who resented his pushy behavior and his ``do-now-pay- later'' attitude. His successful battle with the aging power broker led to the establishment of free Shakespeare in New York City's Central Park, which has since become a beloved tradition. Papp established the Public Theater in the landmark Astor Library building, producing such surprise hits as the first rock musical, Hair, and the longest-running Broadway show ever, A Chorus Line. Meanwhile, his attention moved to championing contemporary plays, often by women, black, or Latino authors. Papp spent his last years hiding the fact that he was suffering from cancer and championing freedom of speech. His sympathy for the urban poor, his open- casting policy at a time when it was hardly trendy, and his basic libertarianism are all to be admired, but he comes across as a tireless self-promoter who often confused his personal good with the common good. Spending so much time with Papp is like spending a long holiday with an annoying, if lovable, relative. Recommended for theatrical mavens and cultural historians. The story of Joe Papp is the story of a precious stage ofAmerican theater history -- an intensely productive period forAmerican playwrights and New York theater -- and as such, this book is satisfying. The author is a Papp fan, so it's to her credit that this reader found Papp complex and industrious, but not terribly likable or insightful about the theatrical art or craft. As a visionary, his successes are a matter of record -- though no one would want producers to emulate his thoughtless, irresponsible, "raging bull" approach to developing the artistic and financial security of an organization. Yet the man was a force of nature, and his interaction with his community -- documented here in detail -- is of genuine historical interest.

Blueprint to becoming a theatre impresario 17. November 2011

Format:Kindle Edition
I read this book my freshman year in college (some 15 years ago) and it changed my life. Inspired by Papp's twin beliefs in theatre for all, as well as having the city and community cover the cost I set out with friends to produce a show in my hometown of Savannah, Ga. I was 19 at the time and could never have pulled this off if I hadn't had the example stories, letters, and attitude of Papp that I absorbed from this book. (The review in the local paper called it "Daring but Flawed")

The book is full of inspiring stories of how Papp built his empire, and how he took a strong stance in demanding what he needed from the City of New York, as well as those around him. Even some of Papp's actual letters to city officials are captured here. The book also touches on how Papp worked to nurture playwrights and directors and created a space for community and culture to emerge. Epstein does a good job of showing Papp was not perfect, without having that part draw too much focus from the central theme of how he did what he did.

A must read for anyone interested in history of theatre, or looking to become a producer.
Helen Epstein's Joe Papp 22. September 2011
Von Irene Angelico - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Lucky for us readers that Helen Epstein tackled her biography of Joe Papp once again, after having given up twice before. With exhaustive research, frank personal observations and countless anecdotes from Papp's family, friends, colleagues and enemies, Epstein creates a stunning portrait that reveals where the great producer came from, what inspired him and how he went about accomplishing his many missions -- on stage and off. Born out of poverty, Papp once remarked that it was not poverty, but anti-Semitism and the Holocaust that troubled him. We follow his evolution as he channels his personal outrage against discrimination into his many missions: Shakespeare for everyone, not just the rich, and free at that, African-American causes, gay causes, color blind casting & minority theatre." Epstein's biography is a rich, nuanced and frank monument to the great man, and a page-turner that never disappoints.
