Excellent bio of a great actor

John Gilvey has two essential qualities a biographer needs: he is an excellent writer and a meticulous researcher. He tells the story of the man whom Mayor Bloomberg called "a quintessential New Yorker," indeed one who "symbolized the city." Jerry Orbach's triumphs on the Broadway stage are recounted in detail as well as his less successful attempts to break into film and his final great success on TV as Detective Lennie Brisco in "Law and Order." The most moving part of the book is the actor's struggle with prostate cancer for the final decade of his life. His courage and dedication to his art may well bring tears to your eyes. It is good to have the story of this gifted man so well told.

John Gilvey's writing style is simply superb! This biography is such a page turner, I read the book in less than two hours, I simply could not put it down. The author discusses Jerry's life with such honesty and humor that the reader feels right at home. There is a vast amount of great imagery on every page. Any fan of Jerry's should read this book.

As it is pointed out in "Jerry Orbach, Prince of the City" most people are not aware of the incredible diversity and range of Jerry Orbach's career. I was intrigued and humbled to learn of the scope of Jerry's career and the many people that he befriended and influenced along the way. John Anthony Gilvey's book beautifully unfolds before the reader and invites you to know more about Jerry: his life, his loves, passions and challenges and, of course, his magnificent career spanning the Broadway stage, feature films and television. This, truly, is an important story to be told for we get to know Jerry; a man who faced his struggles with deep faith and a heart of gold and I can't imagine anyone other than Mr. Gilvey doing it justice. I strongly suggest this book to everyone for it will inspire and lift the spirits of anyone who picks it up and I look forward to reading more works by Mr. Gilvey.
