The negative review above is indicative of unrealistic expectations.
If you want to become an HTML expert, a Java expert, an XML expert, a Servlets expert, or CORBA expert, etc. you'll need another set of books.
If, however, you have already been exposed to these technologies at some level, this book is for you. It provides a solid illustration of how these technologies function together to build a sample e-commerce application. The design of the example application is very good and everything is fairly well-documented.
If you haven't played with or read up with any of these technologies, then the 100-page introduction to them in the beginning of the book probably won't suffice. First buy a decent Java book and an HTML book, read them through, and then read this book to get an understanding of the bigger picture.
You can then turn to other materials for the depth you need for the respective technologies.
