THE STORIES:
Inch-High Samurai: Read--in Japanese--how a tiny, yet very brave samurai manages to marry a princess.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Super Buch 14. April 2014

Tolles Buch mal zum Lesen und Ausprobieren der japanischen Sprache. Durch viele Wiederholungen und die kostenlosen Audiodateien macht dieses Buch sehr viel Spaß. Ich kann es bedingungslos weiterempfehlen. Wirklich gut für Anfänger wie ich es einer bin.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A wonderful book for Japanese learners! (with some small editing errors) 16. März 2012
Von Abby Rood - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
As a Japanese learner, I'm always on the lookout for nice easy stories designed for language students to read, and I'm very happy I found this one! The story is a lovely little fairytale that was fun to read. The writing is a mix of kanji and kana--at first I was a little intimidated by the number of kanji in the text, but the great thing about this book is that each page has a glossary for the Japanese words and expressions used on the page. I like the Boutwells' strategy of having a glossary like this even better than having a full English translation, because their strategy gives the meaning of words or phrases while letting the readers exercise their brains by stringing everything together into a full narrative. The kanji are also repeated throughout the text, so that the first time I see a kanji I might go "Uh-oh, what's this? It looks complicated!" but the second or third time I see it I'm confidently thinking "Oh yeah, I know this one!". It's a nice feeling!

There are a couple of editing/proofreading problems. Firstly, the first time the kanji for "needle" appears, there's no definition for it in the glossary for that page, although it does get defined on later pages. (And actually, the story wavers back and forth between using kanji and kana for "needle".) And secondly, at the end of the book, there's a Japanese-only version of the story, which has a mix-up with an sentence from much later on in the story ("Miyako ni tsuko to...") erroneously inserted near the beginning of the story. I was trying to read the Japanese-only version along with the mp3 that comes with the book (another nice thing about the book!) and got very mixed up and lost because of this error.

All in all, a great book for language learners, with some small errors that would be easily fixed and that I hope the authors correct soon!

3.0 von 5 Sternen No Furigana 21. Oktober 2012

I bought it thinking it would be the followup book to Hikoichi. But, no furigana. Still, good for what i need, but no furigana is a big no-no for me.
4.0 von 5 Sternen like pdfs and mp3 7. März 2014

I appreciate the author's help in emailing the downloads for pdfs and mp3 for the kindle version of the books. Only have smartphone no computer. (Very prompt responding and working with me to get downliad that would work on smartphone).
If you download and can't find your file on galaxy samsung s3 look in My Files.

I was pleasantly surprised that the grammar while brief was quite helpful even with my being fairly new and a self learner. (I do have grammar books to reference also)

Since I just learned the hiragana and about to start on the katakana this is a slow go for me.

I really really like the Slow version mp3 which I am able to follow along with.

All words are covered below the story. The pdfs include the furigana above the kanji and the romanized is included with the translation below.

Can't think of anything else that could be added to help with reading.(I do have other learning books and dictionaries of course).

If you like these Japanese stories the book below is very nicely done. It has only Japanese with English translation below - no explanation nor audio. Colorful. I plan to use these books to read first and then the test will be how well I can then read the one below. Slightly different version of tales.

4.0 von 5 Sternen neat format 18. Februar 2013
Von James L. Minor - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I love the format of a running glossary and Japanese without the glossary. I thought this particular story was a bit short for the price (compare with The Little Match Girl). There were a couple of mistakes (sentence out of order, etc.) Overall I would recommend it for a Japanese learner.
