Published by Drawn & Quarterly in 2007, Exit Wounds—a tale at once mystery and romance—introduced North American readers to the colorful and tightly woven narrative by Rutu Modan and was included in Time and Entertainment Weekly’s “best of” lists. Jamilti and Other Stories collects the cartoonist’s short works, which lead the reader through unexpected turns of plot and unusual character portraits. Some are darkly fantastical and unsettling, such as the unraveling of a serial-killer murder mystery, or her accounts of an infatuated plastic surgeon and his sanitarium, and a mother back from the dead with dubious healing powers. Others are more attuned to surprising discoveries that shape personal identity, as in the story of a tragic past that lies within a family’s theme hotel, or that of a struggling musician who hopes an upcoming gig will be his big break. In “Jamilti,” Modan addresses political violence with a suicide bombing that shakes up a day in the lives of a young couple.

"Jamilti and Other Stories" is a collection of Rutu Modan's stories from her early career up until the publication of "Exit Wounds". The stories range from whimsy (King of the Lillies, about a plastic surgeon who falls for a beautiful girl who disappears and the surgeon spends his days making every woman he works on to look like the girl who disappeared) to the strange (a story about a serial killer who puts underpants on the heads of all the victims) to the contemporary (Jamilti is about a bombing in a cafe).
The stories all contain immediately compelling characters from the fringes of society like a struggling musician or a psychic. There wasn't a story here I didn't like. There were a couple of stories about people looking to find out who their parents were which were all touching and clever. There was also a strange story about a plane that circles a Kibbutz whose owners believe it's flown by their missing son. That was probably the best story out of many great stories in this book.
Rutu Modan's drawing style might not be to everyones' tastes. Some might see it as too simplistic or child like but it's deceptively simple approach makes it's serious subject matter all the more striking as you're reading it. The tone of the stories are perfect in each and all are fascinating reads. Highly recommended, as is "Exit Wounds".

A simple look at the cover should tell you of the art quality to be found inside these pages. Drawn in haste with only pencils & a hand; body proportions stretch & smoosh, landscapes tip to an uneven horizon, in a world void of shadow & perfect lines. In some ways the unpolished illustrations are endearing. Like the raw thoughts poured from Modan's head.
Many of the stories within this anthology are quick, simple, & compellingly enigmatic, like a lone snapshot of an unusual moment in some stranger's life. Others manage to cram a surprising amount of development into their minimal lengths. There's a strange sort of elegance to each of them, a sense of poetry, with honest characters & gentle emotion.
If you enjoyed 'Exit Wounds,' I don't see any reason why you wouldn't enjoy this.

I have not read Exit Wounds, so this was my first encounter with the author. It is simply an unforgettable book with amazing enigmatic, yet fully satisfying short stories. The drawing style is straightforward lines and colours, and the consciously awkwardly drawn figures seem to be arise immediately as we experience them without ornamentation bringing us and riveting us into the heart of the storyteller.
