Amazon.co.uk

Bond is on leave in the Bahamas with the tall, beautiful and intelligent Helena Marksbury, his P.A. at the S.I.S. (as the MI6 is now known). Here, through the murder of his old friend, the ex-Governor of the Bahamas, he has his first taste of a growing World-wide criminal organisation known as "The Union". Back in England two weeks later and the Union is involved again, suspected of being behind the highjacking of Britain's vital military breakthrough "Skin17".

On the trail of the missing micro-dot, 007 travels to Brussels and onto Nepal where he embarks on an epic mission climbing the Kangchenjunga, the World's third highest mountain, in an attempt to rescue the micro-dot from a crashed plane. Needless to say, the British Secret Service isn't the only party interested in retrieving this top military secret and Bond encounters other challenges besides that of surviving this great mountaineering expedition.

In High Time to Kill, Benson has created a 90s' criminal organisation to rival Fleming's own "Smersh" or "Spectre", with a chilling method of disposing of those who cross them. There are some strong episodes--a golf match between Bond and his old Etonian rival, Roland Marquis, and the climax of the mountaineering adventure where Benson keeps you guessing right to the end. Indeed, the appearance of Marquis provides an interesting insight into Bond's schoolboy-like competitiveness.

Although wholesome enough, Bond's romantic adventures aren't as strong here as in many of Benson or John Gardner's previous novels--his efforts are spread too thinly between Marksbury, a toothpick-sucking Belgian agent and the rather dour New Zealand mountaineer, Dr Hope Rendell. Nevertheless, High Time to Kill is a refreshing Bond novel, with the emphasis firmly on espionage and suspense rather than over-stated action and Q-Branch gizmos. --Julian BrosterEND

From Booklist

James Bond, the late Ian Fleming's martini-shaking 007, is alive and well in Benson's latest, chasing nasties from Belgium to the Himalayas. This time, the post^-cold war heavies belong to the Union, a group interested in profits rather than politics. It all begins with the murder of the former governor of the Bahamas while Bond and his lady of the moment are guests in his home. After that, there is the theft of a secret formula and a race to the top of a Nepalese mountain to find the microdot containing the formula. To add to 007's woes, he must cope with a new lady boss--since good old M has retired--and the fact that SIS has a traitor in its midst, who turns out to be Bond's very own assistant . . . whom he has, of course, bedded. It all adds up to solid superagent fun.

Benson succeeds in creating a deft, fast-paced story worthy of 007. With an intriguing setup (the Skin 17 scenario and Bond's latest love interest being caught up with the Union--a very interesting group), strong character relationships (Bond vs. Roland being the anchor for this tale), and a tense mountaineering expedition gone wrong, Benson presents us with a James Bond who's somewhat more fleshed-out than his screen counterpart (he's less stolid and more emotionally developed), but is still the suave, tough superspy we know and love. Sean Connery would be proud. (And as an added bonus, this Bond doesn't make lame puns at every turn, which is much appreciated.)

One minor quibble: As strong as the story is, sometimes Benson tends to go overboard a little bit in terms of the violence in the story. The gruesome throat-slittings, the beheading scene...they certainly make for chilling visuals, but for a James Bond adventure, where it's better to suggest things rather than show them, they're a little much. (If this was made into a film, they'd have to tone it down quite a bit.) Still it's a fun read, and I eagerly await Bond's next encounter with the Union.

A High Time to Kill is by far Benson's best James Bond story so far, and it will be hard to surpass the detail and danger of this spectacular Bond story. everything from the beggining gold match to the climax on top of the world, this story has everything Bond needs. The plot is great, the characters are great, and the action is great. I waited for this one to come out on paperback, and i was sad that i didnt get it earlier. The Union is a great organization (although it is a mirror image of SPECTRE)the follow up, Double Shot, is not as good as this one, but is a good in the Union sort of way. The villian r should I say villians are really good to, and its funny how everybody starts to lose it as they start to climb the mountain. Well thats all i will say. A most have Bond novel

Classic James Bond
This novel contains the James Bond most of us know well. Bond smokes, drinks, chases women (or do they mostly chase him) and takes them to bed, has an international playboy... Lesen Sie weiter...

Benson has some good ideas for Bond novels. I'll grant him that much. Unfortunately, his Bond is the movie Bond rather than the classic James Bond of the Ian Fleming... Lesen Sie weiter...
