This book will help everyone with their training routine. A total beginner to an advanced athlete will find practical information which he could immediately integrate into his or hers training. Beginners will find detailed and practical progressions into a push-up and pull-up which will help them to master these essential exercises. An advanced athlete will read about programs and system he could incooperate into his current training regime and how to do an effective workout while on the road.
The book explains training strategies and plans which are easily done at home and on the road with minimal to no equipment like you would face when you are in jail. You'll also learn something about actual strong inmates and how they trained which is what this book is about.
I highly recommend it to everyone

This book had less "being in jail is hardcore cool" than other prison fitness books and took more of a scientific look at *why* some people end up getting in shape when incarcerated.

The weighted routines looked better than the bodyweight stuff. If you truly want to get bigger and better using bodyweight only training, I think you are better off using Stew Smith's "PT Pyramid" and some squats at least a few times a week rather than a bodybuilding-style 'split' where you train different body parts different days.

That said, this is a very good book and well worth the money, and most of even the bodyweight info in there is spot on. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again.

All these years of new equipment, new supplements, new "performance enhancing gym clothes" etc, it's awesome to finally read a solid, old school type book that's well rooted in how the old pro's did it. If you're in to all of the hype, Men's Fitness BS, look away, but if you're looking for a solid, PROVEN method for getting strong by incorporating hard work, sweat and blood in to your daily life, this is where you need to be. After working with Josh Bryant in the past, and being in the home of hard work Metroflex Arlington, there are no short cuts with Josh. He will go to the ends of the earth to make sure everything he's putting out is proven, well resourced and actually works, no fluff, no BS.

Jailhouse Strong lays out essential weightlifting and body-weight exercises. The exercises not only help build endurance but also size and core strength. It is one of the first workouts I've ever done where I was able to pack on muscle where my cardio did not suffer. And, I'm not a giant by any stretch of the imagination. When I first started doing the Jailhouse Strong workouts, I weighed around 165-169 pounds. Three months later, I'm 185 pounds, still making gains, while keeping my cuts.

Josh and Adam layout a program that is easy to follow, making a trip to the gym or nearest pull up bar enjoyable once again. The book is written in an easy, readable manner unlike many other workout books that are inundated with technical jargon. Jailhouse Strong makes sense, and you get what the book is about from the get go. The various characters and stories keep you turning pages rather than surrendering it to a forgotten, dusty shelf.

Great work out, good read; the book was solid.

First off let me say I don’t care what most “fitness experts” say because most of them are just trying to SELL YOU on the latest and greatest. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have been a C.P.T. over 15 years and always keep an open mind when looking to include different tools for my tool bag. I have competed in a wide range of sports over the years and have adapted different training techniques to form well-rounded programs for not only my clients, but myself included. I have for the last 8 years served in the United States Army both in the Infantry and Military Police. I have always held a superior APFT and due to my past/part-time profession and experience, I normally get put in charge of conditioning my fellow soldiers. While deployed if you serve in a Combat MOS and basically live outside the wire staying in top condition can become tricky. This issue is common and has spawned inventive programs and even equipment to be made, for example the TRX. A soldier on deployment can relate and even experience the same kind of issues an inmate can. Meaning the use of exercise is to not only keep a soldier fit to fight, but to also help psychologically. Long stressful days can build upon themselves and one needs a healthy outlet for the monotonous times. I guess it can also be said if you look like you mean business, confrontations seem to be drastically reduced. In the book I found the workouts quite familiar, but the protocols as far as repetitions and rest times seem quite difficult. I have never done a “Tyson Squats” workout (For 5 mins.! Smoke City Baby) or Burpees for 10 mins. (BURTAL!!ARE YOU CRAZY!) Challenge accepted! To note these aren’t just one workout, but part of routines found on page 64 and 65. I found with the humor of the author mixed in with the actually meat and potatoes, the reading quite easy to digest and often found myself laughing. This kind of humor isn’t for everyone and neither are these workouts. NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED! I am going to recommend this book to a lot of my fellow soldiers, because these are the type of workouts we NEED. A soldier can’t be all show and no go, and with the fact that these workouts can be done ANYWHERE without any EQUPIMENT, makes these workouts and this book ideal for not only the harden locked up inmates, but my brothers in theater too. I will also include some of the training modalities with my clients of all ages and fitness levels. Personally I am about to try the 20- min.Admin. Segregation Workout (AS) found on page 66-67. I will mix this in with my lifting routines (WESTSIDE) and my Army conditioning (ie. rucking, running, and being a total badass), to be a Jail House Strong Soldier!
