The Israel Lobby," by John J. Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago and Stephen M. Walt of Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government, was one of the most controversial articles in recent memory. Originally published in the London Review of Books in March 2006, it provoked both howls of outrage and cheers of gratitude for challenging what had been a taboo issue in America: the impact of the Israel lobby on U.S. foreign policy.
Now in a work of major importance, Mearsheimer and Walt deepen and expand their argument and confront recent developments in Lebanon and Iran. They describe the remarkable level of material and diplomatic support that the United States provides to Israel and argues that this support cannot be fully explained on either strategic or moral grounds. This exceptional relationship is due largely to the political influence of a loose coalition of individuals and organizations that actively work to shape U.S. foreign policy in a pro-Israel direction. Mearsheimer and Walt provocatively contend that the lobby has a far-reaching impact on America's posture throughout the Middle East--in Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, and toward the Israeli-Palestinian conflict--and the policies it has encouraged are in neither America's national interest nor Israel's long-term interest. The lobby's influence also affects America's relationship with important allies and increases dangers that all states face from global jihadist terror.
Writing in The New York Review of Books, Michael Massing declared, "Not since Foreign Affairs magazine published Samuel Huntington's 'The Clash of Civilizations?' in 1993 has an academic essay detonated with such force." The publication of The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy is certain to widen the debate and to be one of the most talked-about books of the year.

This book is so disturbing because of several aspects; first, it has been meticulously researched, one needs to throw a look on the index to get astonished of the wide range of the resources the authors relied on; interviews, public conferences, university lectures and above all from well respected journalists and historians. Second, although the authors went into the smallest details to underpin their conclusions, similar concerns have been raised by well respected historians and journalists--the essence of the book has been summarised in 200 pages introduction of David Hirst; the Gun and the Olive Branch: The Roots of Violence in the Middle East. And lastly, the authors enjoy such an unequivocal intellectual integrity, that any attempt to label them as anti-Semites--the common charge--would sound only absurd.
What is rather perplexing is the stubbornness of the Israeli politics and its supporters. Israel cannot have peace and acceptance in the region, if the Palestinian question is not resolved on terms, which can be accepted by the Arabs. And, if Israel, its supporters and the US fail to consider a U-turn in their policies, the future would be bleak for Jewish, Christian and Muslim lives in the region. Israel has to understand that it has to cope with rising religious fanaticism equipped with dramatic increase of Arab birth rate and it simply cannot win.
Reading the conclusion in The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy, one is reminded of Plato, that "Philosophers are useless for themselves and for the others"

Den Mut, die Wahrheit ausszusprechen ist leider keine Selbstverständlichkeit. Hier haben zwei Wissenschaftler die Courage gehabt, die politischen Machenschaften in den USA aufzugedecken und publik zu machen.

Zunächst: Das Buch ist langweilig. Großteils ist es eine Aufzählung, wann und wie ein amerikanischer Präsident oder Politiker von Israel oder jüdischen Interessensverbänden in Amerika, um diese geht es im Buch, beeinflusst wurde. Stellenweise kommt aber "Spannung" auf. Etwa dann, wenn die angeblichen wahren Hintergründe des zweiten Irak-Krieges erklärt werden. Nicht der Wunsch nach Absetzung eines brutalen Diktators, auch nicht das Verlangen nach Kontrolle über die irakischen Ölreserven, sondern - man höre und staune - die atomare Bedrohung Israels durch den Irak wäre primärer Auslöser dieses Krieges gewesen.
Wie die Autoren selbst schreiben (S. 87), leben in Israel rund 5,3 Mio. Juden. Wie man in Wikipedia leicht nachlesen kann, leben in Amerika rund 5 Mio. Juden. Macht also insgesamt rund 10 Mio. Juden, um die es in diesem Buch geht (weltweit gibt es ohnehin nur rund 15 Mio. Juden). Die Botschaft des Buches ist simpel: Seit den 60er Jahren (beginnend mit Kennedy) haben die Interessensvertretungen dieser rund 10 Mio. Juden die Präsidenten Amerikas, Herrscher eines Landes mit 310 Mio. Einwohnern, bei ihren außenpolitischen Entscheidungen zu Gunsten Israels manipuliert. Diese hätten dabei amerikanische Interessen vernachlässigt.
Man könnte es aber auch anders ausdrücken: Die Autoren sprechen den seit Kennedy amtierenden amerikanischen Präsidenten schlichtweg die politische Reife ab, die Interessen ihres Landes selbständig und unbeeinflusst beurteilen zu können!
Jedenfalls ist Lobbyarbeit nichts Verwerfliches. Dass Israel von den USA massiv unterstützt wird, ist nichts Neues. Neu ist aber, dass nunmehr auch von amerikanisch-akademischer Seite ein angeblich zu großer jüdischer Einfluss beklagt wird. Seit biblischer Zeit sind Juden den abstrusesten Anfeindungen und Unterstellungen ausgesetzt. Diese Anfeindungen finden in diesem Buch eine subtile "moderne Fortsetzung".
