Über den Autor
'Abd al-Rahman al-Jaziri was a professor at University of al-Azhar and chief inspector for the Ministry of Religious Endowment's Department of Mosques. He is the author of Clarification of Doctrines, Proofs of Certainty, and Religious Ethics and the Manifestations of Wisdom in the Islamic Law.

An Excellent Translation of a classic in Comparative Fiqh

Islamic Jurisprudence According to the Four Sunni Schools is a translation of the first volume classic work of Imam Jaziri's Al Fiqh 'Ala Madhahib al Arba'ah.
For those interested in the topic of comparative fiqh, this is work is a must to have. As with any comparative fiqh work, this book isn't meant for people who are interested in studying basic fiqh itself.
It is recommended to study basic fiqh with a qualified scholar who usually goes over a classical fiqh primer from one of the four schools. As one advances in fiqh studies, one learns not only proofs and methodology but also comparative fiqh as well.
The current work is a huge 1000+ tome with a wealth of info and comprehensive footnotes. The preface and introductions also help the reader navigate through the text with the correct framework in which the text is meant to convey.

This is one of the best books on the subject for both Muslims and non Muslims. For the Muslims it is a guide to what and how islam is to be practised through the teachings of the four great schools of thought. It also is a guide for Muslims on what is permissible and what isn't. For the non Muslims it is a guide to why Muslims do what they do and the reasons behind this.
It is highly recomended to all who are interested in understanding islam.

A must for any library, personal or otherwise

The book itself is a great reference for anyone wanting to know the ruling of a particular matter according to one or all four of the Sunni orthodox legal schools of thought. Rather than being a work of comparative fiqh, it is a reference book to facilitate the practicing Muslim's daily effort to follow his or her religion.
Overall, the translator, Nancy Roberts, has done a wonderful job, just as she did with al-Buti's Fiqh us-Seerah an-Nabawiyyah (the so-called "Jurisprudence in Muhammad's Biography"). There is however one troublespot in her translation that duty requires me to point out. She occasionally interpolates her own comments in the footnotes. (e.g. On page 251, footnote 33). At the VERY end, there's a little (TN) to mark it as a translator's note, but I feel it's not very well marked to clearly separate it from the original text.
Nonetheless, I highly recommend it for all Muslims, but particularly those following madhhabs because of its ease of use and because such detailed sources are hardly available in English, particularly for Malikis and Hanbalis, though I sincerely believe adherents of all 4 schools will find benefit.
