Die im Rahmen der Classic Albums-Serie entstandene Dokumentation über Iron Maidens Metal-Klassiker The Number of the Beast leistet weitaus mehr, als die Entstehung eines einzelnen Albums zu rekapitulieren, denn sie bietet gleichzeitig eine reizvolle Einführung in die Anfangszeit der Band. Als sich Punk im Jahre 1976 anschickte, der dominante Trend im Musik-Business zu werden, begann der junge Bassist Steve Harris Gleichgesinnte um sich herum zu versammeln, um seiner eigenen Form von hartem Rock zu ihrem Recht zu verhelfen und auf diese Weise die New Wave of British Heavy Metal loszutreten: 1980 brachten sie das erste, selbstbetitelte Album Iron Maiden heraus; nur zwei Jahre später gingen sie ins Studio, um das wichtigste Metal-Album der 1980er-Jahre aufzunehmen.

The Number of the Beast etablierte die Band in den Charts, aber nicht im Mainstream. Wer sich die Interviews mit Steve Harris & Co. ansieht, ahnt, warum Iron Maiden nie cool waren. Entgegen dem düsteren Image, das dem Metal-Genre anhängt, erweisen sich die eisernen Jungfrauen als ausgesprochen entspannte, freundliche Mitmenschen, die die gezeichneten Horrorszenarien auf den Album-Covern damit erklären, dass ihre eigenen Gesichter auf diese Weise weniger bekannt geblieben sind und sie nach wie vor ungestört im Supermarkt einkaufen gehen können. Die ausführlichen Passagen, in denen Steve Harris, Sänger Bruce Dickinson, die beiden Gitarristen Dave Murray und Adrian Smith, der damalige Drummer Clive Burr sowie Produzent Martin Birch bereitwillig über die einzelnen Songs des Albums Auskunft geben -- Adrian Smith demonstriert sogar kurze Gitarrenparts -- sind daher die große Stärke dieser DVD. Wer das 12 Wasted Years-Video kennt, dem wird zwar manche Anekdote, die hier zum Besten gegeben wird, bekannt vorkommen. Doch das nimmt der Plauderstunde mit den Metal-Meistern nichts von ihrem Unterhaltungswert.

Der absolute Höhepunkt der DVD befindet sich allerdings in den Bonus-Materialien: Dort gibt es einen Vorgeschmack auf die Live in Rio-DVD, die im Laufe des Jahres erscheinen soll. Dabei muss man zwar den nervigen dritten Gitarristen Yannick Gers ertragen, aber die Live-Darbietung von "Hallowed be thy Name" lässt keinen Zweifel zu, dass Iron Maiden im dritten Jahrzehnt ihres Bestehens nichts an Spielfreude verloren haben und immer noch über einzigartige Bühnenpräsenz verfügen. --René Classen
