This book traces the history of dance in Ireland and reveals how Irish dance has survived centuries of emigration, invasion, and persecution. It is more than the history of dance, however, with chapters on music, dance costumes, competitions, and the phenomenal revival. The book also defines the social and cultural significance of dance in Ireland and among the Irish Diaspora. For the smitten fan of Irish dance, there are instructions and illustrated steps to two elementary dances. Irish dance, which probably dates back to the Druids, is today on the universal stage and may be seen in the movie Titanic as well as in the mesmerising stage shows Riverdance and Lord of the Dance. Much more than mere entertainment or spectator sport, Irish dance attracts more than 1000 international competitors annually to the World Championships.

I thought that this book was very interesting, although frustrating because there were no pictures, only illustrations. The best part of this book was the last chapter, in which a step by step instruction shows how to do several moves in the Irish Jig. This book is a must for anyone new to the world of Irish Dancing becuase it gives an overview of the history, future, origins, costumes, etc. of Irish Dancing.

Arthur Flynn's book is well-designed for people who never heard about Irish Dance before and who therefore are mainly interested in the basics of this wonderful artform. They get an introduction to origins, history, costumes, the different forms of dancing and today's practise of Irish Dance. For those who can't wait to kick their heels there are even two easy basic steps on the final pages.
