Um es gleich zu sagen: Der Lonely Planet Irland ist wirklich jeden Pfennig wert, den man für ihn ausgibt. Auf insgesamt 800 Seiten wird einem so ziemlich alles beschrieben, was es auf der grünen Insel zu beschreiben gibt.Der Lonely Planet Irland beginnt mit einer umfangreichen Einleitung (130 Seiten!), in der alles Wissenswerte über Irland nachzulesen ist: Geschichte, Klima, Flora & Fauna, Bevölkerung, Religion, Sprache, alles Wissenswerte für Besucher, Beschreibung der wichtigsten Aktivitäten wie Wandern, Radfahren, Fischen, Golfen, Reiten etc., Anreisemöglichkeiten, Fortbewegungsmöglichkeiten auf der Insel. Außerdem wird gezielt auf die Geschichte und Politik der Republik Irland und später auf die Nordirlands eingegangen. Anschließend gibt es detaillierte Beschreibungen der Sehenswürdigkeiten Dublins und sämtlicher Grafschaften der Republik Irlands und Nordirlands, bei denen wirklich keine Wünsche offen bleiben. Ergänzt wird all das durch traumhafte Bilder, Landkarten und Zeichnungen. Und natürlich findet sich zu jeder Sehenswürdigkeit eine Beschreibung, wie man am besten hinkommt und wo man in der Nähe übernachten kann. Fazit: Wer nicht nur einmal oder auch für längere Zeit nach Irland fahren möchte, dem sei dieser hervorragende Reiseführer wärmstens empfohlen. The Lonely Planet guide book series is by far the best set of books I have found for travel. Let's Go, Rough Guide, Frommer's, etc do not live up to these books. LP offers a great blend of interesting facts (history, etc) with the travel information that we all really want. I am a student who spent the summer of 1999 traveling through Europe and spring 2000 in ireland. I did read a number of other books before and durring the trip, and will always buy Lonely Planet as they have impressed me as being the best, hands down. If you want to go on a drunken tour, buy Let's Go and end up in the same run down American hostels and American bars as the rest of the American students, but take my word, you will have enough ability to do that with LP, but you will not be forced to either. LP will help you to actually experience the culture, and take in a more European version of Europe than Let's Go, and still give you the opportunity to party like a rock star when you want - its up to you. It is the most complete and most versitile book I have found. It will cater to budget and intermediate travelers of all ages and groups. I will buy the same series even when I can afford nice resturants and hotels, because LP tells it all. The same experience is true for my trip this last spring to Ireland. gerade erst bin ich zurück von meiner Reise durch Irland mit dem Lonely Planet als Reiseführer. Bislang habe ich gerade für Reisen mit Rucksack und Zelt in diversen Ländern nur gute Erfahrungen mit Lonely Planet gemacht. Anders war das diesmal: vielleicht weil der Reiseführer nicht von Reisenden sondern von ansässigen Iren geschrieben worden ist, fehlen wichtige Infos. Z.B. die wichtigsten Zeltmöglichkeiten, wo kann Wäsche gewaschen werden etc. Andere Info ist schlichtweg falsch: z.B. gibt es ein ganzes Kapitel darüber, dass Vegetarier gar nicht erst nach Irland reisen brauchen. Völliger Quatsch: selbst der letzte Pub bietet leckere vegetarische Varianten an und alle Lebensmittel sind mit einem extra Symbol versehen "Suitable for vegetarian". Vermißt habe ich auch Wandertouren, ausführliche Infos über das hervorragende Netz an Independent Hostels....
