this is easily the most annoying and certainly the worst lonely planet i have travelled with. paul greenway seems to have seen the country through the eyes of someone completely unwilling to adapt to local customs. in large sections of his book he ponitficates on how to find 'western-style' fast food in a country with some of the most delicious and diverse cuisine in the world. because he is 'a pizza-lover'. he gives towns with extremely beautiful and important cultural monuments so-so ratings (see e.g. ardebil: 'this is not an unattractive city'). he repeatedly tries to be funny - at the expense of the natives! for a travel writer this must certainly rate as a mortal sin. iran is stunningly beautiful, its people supremely hospitable and you really should go there. learn some farsi, read a good book on its history and take a culture guide. don't buy the lonely planet: it will spoil the fun.

Den Reiseführer "Iran" von Lonely Planet sollte man bei der Vorbereitung und Durchführung einer Reise in den Iran nicht verwenden. Die Informationen sind teilweise veraltet, teilweise falsch. Die Autoren waren von ihrer Aufgabe, einen aktuellen und informativen Reiseführer zu schreiben, offensichtlich überfordert und konzentrierten sich darauf, ihre Reise möglichst ohne finanzielle Ausgaben hinter sich zu bringen. Verständnis für eine fremde Kultur, Bereitschaft für das Kennenlernen einer anderen Gesellschaft und die Begegnung mit überaus freundlichen Menschen gehörten offensichtlich nicht zu den Reisezielen. Es gibt viel bessere Reiseführer für den Iran.

This book gives an fairly impartial yet Western view of modern Iran. I can see how some Iranians would criticize it, but my wife who is Iranian and me (an American) spent 4 weeks traveling in Iran in March 2000 found this book to be useful before, during, and after the trip. We never encountered any anti-American or anti-West attitudes during our trip, in fact just the opposite. Sure there aren't the nightclubs or other forms of 'entertainment' that you find in the west, like Paul mentions but for us this became an opportunity to do other things. They don't roll up the streets at dark, far from it. The coffee shops, resturants, stores, and bazaars in many cities are open quite late with many people shopping, having a meal or a chat. My wife said it was much better there than her last trip in 1996. I had a great time! If you're planning a trip to Iran (even if you're Iranian) get this book (my wife enjoyed it too).

A poorly researched and inaccurate representation of Iran.
The book does not discuss the tremendous changes taking place in today's modern Iran.

This book was not objective and had nothing positive to say about the country. It was somewhat mean spirited and had a plethora of stereotypical information.
