Part travelogue, part investment guide, Rogers himself is the real centrepiece, at times railing (if that's the right word) against local custom/ideology/policy, on other occasions providing eye-opening investment tips on where the sensible money should be going. Shunning the usual tourist routes, Rogers' odyssey takes him through landscapes and economies unique in culture and currency where his natural charisma shines through in easy-going commentary. It's not all image though; Rogers' predictions on emerging markets have proved by and large to be unerringly accurate.

As a BMW motorcyclist and long-distance touring afficionado, I found the book diverting as a travelogue. However, it became annoying as a the author's self promotion, not only professionally but personally, began to intrude. Mr. Rogers siezed every opportunity to remind us that his travelling companion, Ms. Estabrook, was not merely a platonic friend. This apparently needed to be alluded to often, as she had thoughtfully prepared for the journey by actually taking motorcycle repair classes, and would probably otherwise have been mistaken for a mechanic rather than a tootsie. By way of example, he helpfully lists "birth control pills" rather than the boringly generic "prescription medications" in his travelers' packing checklist appendix. If Viagra had been available at the time, one wonders if it would have merited special mention as well?

I'm not into motorcycling, nor in dire need of investment guidelines, so this book had been sitting on my bookcrossing stack for quite a while. However, I was positively surprised when I finally picked it up to read. It's true that the author is remarkably convinced of himself, but I found it more amusing than annoying. Besides, one has to give it to him that he achieved some remarkable things. Now I don't think I'll draw much in terms of investment advice from the book, but I think it makes for a very interesting travel report. His economic background gives the author a unique perspective on the countries they touch on during their trip. And they get to some parts of the world where it seems few people outside of those countries ever set foot. That the report is now a few years old only makes it more interesting. I am not versed enough in modern history to compare the authors predictions about the future developments of the countries he visitied with the actual outcomes. But he seems to make a lot of valid points.
It reminds me a bit of the book "Eat The Rich" which is also by a journalist with focus on economics visiting various countries in the world to see what makes them poor or rich.

As an english and philosophy major, I thought I was destined for grad school and a PhD. Then, in my sophomore year, I thumbed through a copy of this book lying on my buddy's dorm room floor. Next thing I knew, I'd read more than 50 books on investing and trading. Grad school went out the window. Now, years later, I'm a professional futures trader. Need I say more?
Has its flaws, but all in all a great book.

I loved it!
This was a great read. I loved his insights into economics and the world in general, but the bike trip itself was interesting as hell.

Remarkably gripping.
