Come on, it wasn't that bad!

Format:Taschenbuch
This book was obviously geared more towards web designers than hard code techies. The author assumes that you have a good grasp of HTML and focuses primarily on introducing the reader to server side programming concepts and getting comfortable with the Visual Studio interface. As the previous reviewer noted, the teaching style is similar to the Visual Quickstart series where you learn by typing.
The good points:
- Complex topics like web services and the ADO.NET framework are explained in a manner that an experienced developer like me who is unfamiliar with server side programming can easily understand.
- The case studies and sample projects are also pretty good tools to get you acclimated with the features of Visual Studio .NET
The bad points:
- Too many typos
- Too much emphasis is placed on using the GUI to build your application
- Coverage on some topics (e.g Visual Basic and C#, custom validators and control events) are basically non-existent
- Not enough focus on code behind the page
Conclusion:
A good book to get started with but by no means a hardcore reference book. I started with this book and supplemented my knowledge with Scott Mitchell's ASP.NET Web Controls and Jesse Liberty's Programming ASP.NET
The good points:

One of the Worst Programming Books Ever

What a waste of my money! This book didn't help me learn ASP.NET hardly at all. Why? Well, I'll give you several reasons.
First of all, the teaching method is brainless. The author tells you to click here and click there, but barely any reasoning is ever given for why you're doing what you're doing. In the end, you have more questions than answers.
The other major problem is that the explanations that are in the book are horrible and disjointed. Concepts and terms are referenced as if the reader already knows them--even though they aren't explained until later on.
And let's not forget the typos and poor English that dot this book. Was this even edited before going to press? I am so completely dissatisfied with this textbook it's not even funny. It's not valuable for anything except maybe firewood. Total thumbs down! =(

Don't pay attention to the feeding frenzy

The book is fine. I would normally rate it at 3 or a little higher but I've bumped it up to 4 to offset the reader who didn't read the book but gave it a single star rating.
It has the normal typos and silliness that creep into a first time text; however, it is much better than almost any other asp.net text out there. I have used it in four .NET classes and, with instructor assistance, it comes out smelling much better than the Deitel or other texts.
Our students are among the most finicky of people and the average rating for the text - with 45 students replying - was 3 out of 4 points.
I recommend augmenting it with the .pdfs from asp.net and using common sense when attempting the projects. These additions are probably what turned the tide in the class from some confusion to acceptance that the text was good enough.
Again, there are errors so go to the book's site and download the errata. The next edition (which I am reviewing) is much better and should be on the market very soon.
