As part of the Dummies Guide to Family Computing series, this book is short on technobabble and long on chatty helpfulness. Author Barbara Moran assumes that you know how to use a computer and an Internet connection and focuses on finding you great places to go. Moran offers brief but valuable discussions on basic Internet safety and on the top Internet filtering programs, which are worth reading before you get the idea that software can supervise your kids for you. The real value, though, is in the site listings for every topic of interest to parents or kids. Six main parts of the directory cover sports, toys, clubs, and games; reference materials for students; news, weather, and current events; family life; entertainment and travel; and science and nature. The seventh part lists the top 10 sites for parents and the top 10 for kids. Symbols give you basic information on each site at a glance, telling you what age groups the site is appropriate for, whether there's an ask-the-expert opportunity there, if the site is graphics-intensive or requires special plug-ins to use, or if parental supervision is advised. Moran also marks the sites that are great homework resources, that require a fee, or that offer an abundance of links to other useful sites. An enclosed CD-ROM offers instant links to all the sites reviewed.

I like this book very much but I am confused about who wrote this book. On the book, there is only one author, but you list two authors. I am not sure what to tell friends who want to find this book. There is no mention of anyone named Kathy Ivens in the whole book. Did you guys goof?

Very nice book. I have two copies. Selling one. The book lists what appears to be thousands of family-oriented website addresses with descriptions. Everything for fun and games, to schoolwork, science, history, etc. The book comes with a CD that is still sealed in its original jacket.
