What a delightful reading! 16. Januar 2013
Von Ale - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
I teach International Economics in Europe and it can hence be said that I am an avid consumer of an awful amount of International Economics textbooks. Sure, I am very familiar with the most popular ones on the market. Likewise, I know many others which are seldom used at universities worldwide. I enjoy the majority of them, since they somehow succeed in conveying useful information about theories and empirical evidence to the reader. But I must confess that John Mclaren's recent textbook amazed me in that it employs an incredibly original approach to awake the reader's curiosity on how the models can be applied to the stories displayed at the beginning of each chapter. In addition, the book's very well written and the level is just about right, neither too basic nor too advanced. Also, it manages to cover a fairly wide bunch of theories, ranging from the traditional (Ricardian model, Heckscher-Olhin, Scale Economies, etc.) to the most modern ones (Feenstra-Hanson, Melitz model, etc.), including a couple of chapters - the last two - that deal with international macroeconomics (dynamic general equilibrium models, but boiled down to undergraduates).
Another innovation I find awesome is the family tree of trade models. It walks you through the different theories that are needed to understand why countries engage in trade (this is a complex process requiring more than one simple model).
I agree with the first commenter on what he or she says that once you start reading it, even if you do not teach or do research in this field, it's very easy to get completely hooked on it and find it unputdownable. I contracted that "disease"! Needless to say, I am using it in my undergraduate course.

A TEXTBOOK I read from cover to cover! 15. November 2012
Von Botong - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
Actually I read this book before it was published because I was so luckily enrolled in the author's international trade class. This is one of the few economics textbooks I've read from cover to cover, honestly, because it's just like reading an interesting novel! At the beginning of each chapter, you will be captivated by a vivid real-life story and then a simple but delicate model will tell you the economic intuition behind it. I can still remember the time when I stayed up in the Clemons to read this (text!)book! This book even partially helped reinforce my dedication to pursue an Econ PhD because it showed me how interesting this field was! BTW, if you are an student, I'm sure you will LOVE that Family Tree. The only pity I have is that I found the book included some new topics which we didn't cover when I took the class, especially "Is Renminbi the culprit?" All in all, this is one of the most exciting textbooks and courses I've taken in college. Hope you will find it interesting, too!
Great textbook! 8. April 2015

good book. has a great teaching method of sharing an insightful real-world conflict, and then applying theory to the problem.

Sometimes, the theory is not explained very well, so some knowledge of economics is required. But, you could also easily skim the theory because the summary of the theory is explained well and the application to real-world problems makes it much more tangible.

International Trade is a very complex topic, highly political, and still has several research topics and theories. But this book does a good job of simplifying it as much as possible. For example, the diagram provided at the end of each chapter really helps to explain why nations trade and to show that progress of what we have learned in the book.

If I were a teacher, I highly recommend following this book for you class.
Professor is not very good at lecturing 21. März 2015

I was in class taught by the author himself. Professor is not very good at lecturing, but his book is absolutely amazing at getting to the point and explaining the concepts and graphs. Taking off one star because as a math oriented person I found the lack of 'showing your work' to be frustrating.

Excellent textbook for college. Not for general public. If you are good at mathematical thinking, you will understand well. If not, go find another.
