1.0 von 5 Sternen Total waste of money 8. Februar 2014
Von B.J. Ohms - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This was a total waste of money as far as I am concerned. The author seems to just have copied much of the text from places like Wikipedia. The part about the medals doesn't even seem to have been updated from his 2012 Summer Olympics book. "For example, the 2012 London Games have created medals that are thicker, heavier, and greater in diameter than before, and will cost somewhere around $700 each." This doesn't sound like it was written in 2013, but in 2011/12.

The descriptions of the events themselves are very short and do not contain much information. This doesn't start until 60% into the book (and descriptions of the current take up than less than 20% of the book).

The section on snowboarding is a mere 68 words long. In this text, the author manages to include the following information: When it was invented (first 21-ish words), when it was introduced (the next 11 words). Then there is this description of the event itself: "Snowboarding has six events namely men's and women's halfpipe, men's and women's parallel giant slalom, and men's and women's snowboard cross." The remaining 15 words of the text is used to tell the reader that this is one of the most popular sports of the games.

In other words, if you were looking for a book to help you really enjoy the events and learn just a little bit more about them, you have been looking in the wrong place. Instead I would go somewhere like [...], where the author has taken the time to actually inform well about each event, so even ignorants can enjoy them. Otherwise I would cross my fingers that Goldblatt/Acton gets around to creating a Winter events version of their brilliant "How to Watch the Olympics".

1.0 von 5 Sternen Very, Very Light Reading 28. Januar 2014
Von Andrew Collins - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
As part of the Olympic movement, the Winter Olympic Games have been held since 1924. They are a prestigious event of athleticism and are world-famous. This book is a short look at the history of the Winter Games.

There is really not much to say about this book aside from the fact that it is very, very short and contains little real information. I read the whole thing in less than an hour. You might expect a retrospective of the most notable events in the games' history, but there is none of that. What about a description of the various sports played? Hardly any. Surely there must be some mention of the greatest athletes to have competed? Nope.

It is quite obvious that the author has a great love of the Winter Games, but this book was a poor effort at telling the story. Save your money and just read some articles on Wikipedia (where the author apparently got some of his information anyway) and the official Olympic website.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent Insight Into Olympic History 3. November 2012
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I adore history and this book gave me a fantastic dose of it! I always watch both the summer and winter games but in small does. The only time I really paid close attention to the games the entire time was back in 2008 and that was only because I LOVED Apollo Ono and his sexy soul patch! BUT, after reading Marc Jenner's telling of Olympic history I can honestly say that I will be paying close attention to this year's games from start to finish! The information in this book was fascinating to say the least. I especially loved the information about how the torch is lit each year! I won't say anymore because I do not want to spoil it for people who have not read it yet. This is the last thing I will say...READ THIS BOOK. It is great for everyone, but it is especially great for history lovers everywhere!
