i received this book as a gift and was really excited about reading it. after about 20 pages my enthusiasm waned considerably. ms. horowitz is possibly someone with whom it would be fun to chat on a dog walk in riverside park, but reading her prose is a chore. there is some interesting information included, especially the sections on smell and vision, but her chatty, verbose style is off-putting and most of the information she presents is available elsewhere in a more concise, better structured format (gwen bailey does a great job relating much of this info in about 10 pages in 'the perfect puppy').
read a few pages of the book before you buy. like the book 'eat pray love,' if you enjoy the breezy, chatty, whimsical style of the authoress, you will enjoy meandering along with her on her journey and won't mind the very low infomation-to-page ratio. if you don't enjoy her style, you might find the book more useful as a sleeping aide.
