"Innovation Strategy for the Knowledge Economy" is intended for managers who have practiced the best of quality and re-engineering management techniques and are ready to transform their organizations with the systematic notions of knowledge creation and application. It is for organization leaders who prefer to be inspired with innovation strategy than hit over the head with change management techniques. It does not deal with barriers, hurdles, or conflicts to be resolved; rather, it paints a possible vision of how we can take advantage of our collective learning to move an enterprise forward. This book provides the reader with a sound, practical framework for instituting innovation strategy beyond the traditional definition of flow of parts or finances. At the core is an understanding of the dual value of knowledge (content) and innovation (process) using 'real-time' learning as the methodology. "Innovation Strategy for the Knowledge Economy" introduces new managerial concepts such as: Value-System versus Value-Chain; Strategic Business Network (SBN) versus Strategic Business Unit (SBU); and Customer Success versus Customer Satisfaction.

It is an invaluable resource for both managers and organization leaders. Debra Mae Amidon is Founder and Chief Strategist of Entovation International, a global innovation research and consulting network with outposts throughout the world. Her specialties include: knowledge management, learning networks, customer innovation, and enterprise transformation. Ms. Amidon holds degrees from Boston University, Columbia and MIT, where she was an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow. It offers practical and theoretical views of innovation strategy. This is a fundamental guide to managing critical intellectual resources. It introduces new managerial concepts.

I found Debra Amidon's book, "Innovation Strategy for the Knowledge Economy -- The Ken Awakening", important because it is an integration of her synthesis of many theories, ideas and practices about innovation strategies with her own theories. It is a enourmous help to have a brilliant person put together, in one readable book, the ideas, theories and notions you have been trying to implement. It is a bridge from the theorists to the practitioners. It makes uncommon good sense. The important nuggets, which are well illustrated in graphics, proved to be very valuable when she used them in practicums on knowledge innovation. They capture much theory, are easily understood and remembered. Participants in workshops or practicums have reported back that they use the book of slides when talking about innovation with colleagues. Anyone, in any type of organization, with a sense that traditional, competitive, hierarchical management is frustrating innovation and the use of the rich knowledge of employees and that the solutions do not lie in single, faddish perscriptions, should read this book to get an overview of the problems and the strategies for knowledge innovation. Read the book to get a sense of how computer and communications technologies can enable collaborative processes, continuous learning, understanding customer success, networking, and real time innovative strategies.

"Innovation Strategy for the Knowledge Economy: The Ken Awakening", by Debra Amidon, at just over 200 pages, is small compared to many conventional books on management. However, I believe its impact will be stronger, and its future brighter, than many much longer books on the subject.
As the title indicates, this book is about innovation strategy, a topic of great intellectual interest, and a type of strategy which business today needs to embrace, develop, articulate and implement.
If you are searching for a book to bring innovation to the forefront, and to discuss how innovation strategy can be put into practice, this book provides the best starting point, I could recommend. It is useful for everyone in business (including, but not limited to, executives and consultants) who regards innovation as a practical method to enhance the impacts and outcomes of business activities. Numerous other publications exist for those who regard innovation as merely a prestigious activity, not to be mixed with the "real" work of running an organization. The author has effectively linked knowledge and innovation strategy. I hope she will write more on the fascinating topic of innovation strategy.

You don't usually expect to pick up a management book with a photograph of Claude Monet's lily pond. The reason is that Amidon describes Monet as "daring to be different". Furthermore, in order to see the big picture you have to stand back. This book helps you step back to see the unfolding panaroma of the knowledge economy and knowledge management.
In a field where there is no shortage of books, few can match the insights and perspectives of this one. It traces the 'momentum of knowledge management' and gives a practical framework for knowledge innovation, the next wave. There are thought provoking concepts and practical questions to assess your organization's capability for knowledge innovation. For me, what sets this book apart from the many others is its high level of insight and original thinking, all expressed in a lucid style that is packed into an ideal format for those occasions when you want inspiration coupled with practical suggestions. So, if you are thinking about your organization's or your nation's future in the knowledge economy, then this is the book to read. It really is the Ken.

We are used to considering innovation as R&D specialty. We are also used to consider each domain separately - management, economy, education, business, marketing, research, sales, engineering, etc.
"Innovation Strategy for The Knowledge Economy" teaches us to see the enterprise (or organization) in its multiple dimensions, and to practice global innovation, based on intellectual capital. It shows the way to organize the flow of knowledge building on humans and computers, including enterprise strategy and stakeholders knowledge for everybody's success. But, this way of thinking implies kaleidoscopic changes and a capability to catch, capitalize and share knowledge.
Debra M. Amidon gives a practical method to apply for analyzing « today and tomorrow » of enterprise (or organization). She defines a systematic way to organize an optimal flow of knowledge inside and integrate all strategic knowledge coming from outside in the form of an extended business network.

Debra has devoted considerable time and energy to develop a practical but compelling approach to knowledge innovation. She provides a sound background on management theory but quickly extends her insights into useful strategies for assessing the current status of knowledge innovation within an organization. Senior managers can easily use Debra's work to improve the state of knowledge innovation within their enterprise and their industry.
Debra also provides valuable insights into the place of alliances and partnerships in today's global economy. Any company that wants to remain competitive can gain useful advise from reviewing the benefits of building a strong business alliance program that shares knowledge among its partner network.
