Few "indispensable" guides are ever just that, but this title comes close to hitting the mark, even though much of the information provided can be found in similar guides, such as Paul Keers's A Gentleman's Wardrobe (1988). Karlen, an attorney and editor, and Sulavik, a journalist, use a question-and-answer format (e.g., "Should a dress shirt have a pocket?") that works well, and the candid remarks provided by dozens of clothing experts are an interesting feature. Helpful line drawings are interspersed throughout the text, although photographs might have provided clearer illustrations in some instances. While this is not quite an indispensable purchase, most public and academic libraries should have at least a few good men's grooming guides like this one on their shelves.AP. While its true that most offices have gone casual these days, this is a book that should still be in every gentleman's library. To be without this knowledge is to be at a grave disadvantage -- Even if your intent is to break the rules, you'll need to understand them first.

The great thing about this book is that it covers the history, origin and derivation of classic men's style, allowing the reader to not only understand the grand traditions, but to approach modern style with a new awareness (read: power) and appreciation.

I absolutely loved this book -- In fact, I wish I'd read it before I ever entered the business world, as it certainly would have saved me a great deal of time and money, not to mention an awkward wardrobe of costly and seldom-worn garments.

If you're interested not only in what to wear and how to wear it, but curious as to where it came from in the first place, this is the book for you.

This book has really come in handy.

Initially, I got this book because I'm getting married later this year and wanted to know what was appropriate and what was not. Not only did the book provide some basic guidelines, it also gave me useful information about all those other, lesser known accessories that go with a Tuxeddo.

What was also great was that the book was not trying to push a particuliar style, company or fashion, but just gave you the facts, useful background information and even some fun historical trivia.

Not only have I used it for my wedding plans, but I've also found myself using it when I buy my clothes for work. Definitely indispensable!

I highly recommend!

Mr. Sulavik and Mr. Karlen have hit a home run with this book on men's dressing. They have combined a helpful how-to book with descriptions and details on how to attain true style. A great addition to you library! - Clint Greenleaf, author of "Attention to Detail"

dissapointing
this isnt what it seems - while there is a bunch of stuff on the types of clothes in the world, it doesn't tell you what to wear to work. my husband liked maximum style much more.

Not Worth the Money
This Indispensable guide has a healthy mix of the obvious and the obviously wrong. Anyone with more than a 3rd grade education knows more than the authors of this dribble.

Garbage
I returned it the book was so bad. The authors dont even realize that GQ is making fun of them in the review at the top of the page. This book is a joke.
