It is 1951 in America, the second year of the Korean War. A studious, law-abiding, intense youngster from Newark, New Jersey, Marcus Messner, is beginning his sophomore year on the pastoral, conservative campus of Ohio's Winesburg College. And why is he there and not at the local college in Newark where he originally enrolled? Because his father, the sturdy, hard-working neighborhood butcher, seems to have gone mad--mad with fear and apprehension of the dangers of adult life, the dangers of the world, the dangers he sees in every corner for his beloved boy.
As the long-suffering, desperately harassed mother tells her son, the father's fear arises from love and pride. Perhaps, but it produces too much anger in Marcus for him to endure living with his parents any longer. He leaves them and, far from Newark, in the midwestern college, has to find his way amid the customs and constrictions of another American world.
Indignation, Philip Roth's twenty-ninth book, is a story of inexperience, foolishness, intellectual resistance, sexual discovery, courage, and error. Philip Roth's latest novel "Indignation" is the first in some years to neither star Nathan Zuckerman, nor Prof. Kepesh.
Marcus Messner, Newark son of a kosher butcher, is the (as we soon find out) dead narrator of this novel, which circles around "the terrible, the incomprehesible way one's most banal, incidental, even comical choices achieve the most disproportionate result".
Marcus, who had been in the debating team during his High School time, a reader and follower of the writings of Bertrand Russel, who chooses to leave his bohemian (and home town) Robert Treat College for the far from home Winesburg College to escape permanent surveillance of his father, soon finds himself in the narrowminded and boring surroundings of a typical american provincial college of 1951. Studying and achieving As being the only interest of his, he soon finds himself being the center of attention of the Dean. A affair leads to agonies, as he realizes himself being unexperienced in the way of life but overwhelmed with emotions... "Look at me, so pathetically conventional upon his arrival here that he could not trust a girl because she blew him"...
What Philip Roth achieved with "Indignation" is a young man's coming-of-age, his quest for the possibility and right to live by his own moral rules, without "eating shit" and bowing to "clergical ass-lickers", even if this means expulsion and the secure ticket to Korea.

Der 19-jährige Marcus Messner führt das Leben eines Außenseiters. Als Sohn eines jüdischen Metzgers nimmt er im Jahr 1951 sein Studium an einer kleinen Universität in Ohio auf. Von seinen Mitkommilitonen hält er sich fern, weil er sich nur auf sein Studium konzentrieren will. Und in der obligatorischen wöchentlichen Messe summt er überzeugte Atheist ununterbrochen die chinesische Nationalhymne vor sich hin, um seiner Empörung ("Indignation") Ausdruck zu verleihen. Zunächst möchte ich mich den bereits vorliegenden sehr positiven Rezensionen anschließen.
Roth dringt wieder einmal so tief in die menschliche Seele ein, dass ich mich quasi in die Haut des Protagonisten hinein versetzt fühlte und mit ihm litt. Ein junger Mensch zerbricht an seiner Aufrichtigkeit, seiner Ehrlichkeit und seinem Mut anders zu sein. Er entflieht dem immer dichter werdenden Netz der elterlichen Fürsorge und versucht SEINEN Weg zu gehen, sich Wissen anzueignen und seine eigenen Ziele konsequent zu verfolgen. Er wird zum Außenseiter, zum Sonderling und scheitert auf tragische Weise.
