4.0 von 5 Sternen THE Single Parent Manual for Raising Boys AND Girls 5. November 2013
Von MommaMia - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
After reading this book, I realized that I had found a kindred spirit in Shondreka Palmer, a fellow parent who feels as I do. If I were going to write a book on single parenting, I would have included all of the information that she did, practical information on budgeting, shopping, shopping for daycares, etc. It's all good, easy to understand advice, and I only wish that more single parents shared her attitude. Putting your child first is KEY in raising a child, whether you are alone or not. Also, her use of the word consistency in discipline, accountability, and her feelings on a strict schedule for sleep are all worthy of note, and all worthy standards to live by when parenting.

My only gripe with this book is the title. I think Ms. Palmer cut off half of her potential readers by calling it "Independently Raising a Man." Yes, she raised a boy on her own, but this book is for ALL single parents. There wasn't much in the book specifically tailored to the single mom of a son, which is fine, but the title can be a bit misleading and also will make those who have girls think the book isn't for them, and that couldn't be further from the truth. This book is ideal for all single parents and I wish that hospitals and clinics would suggest this to young single girls embarking on their journey to parenthood. It's good, sound, practical advice and I thank Ms. Palmer for putting it all down and trying to help others. Children don't come with parenting manuals, but if they did, this one would be perfect!

Thank you for sharing, Ms. Palmer. It's refreshing to see that there are others in the world who share my parenting style. Putting your child first, focusing on their needs...being an active parent, not just a bystander in their's all the key to success. Bless you and your child, Ms. Palmer.

What I have read of this book so far is a book I can identify with because I was a single mom with 3 kids. My youngest was 5 years old when my husband and I divorced and reading Shondreka's book will help me see that others went through the same thing. When I finish reading it, I will indeed come back and give a review of it, fully.

This is a thoughtfully written, first-person guide to raising a child on your own. I received a review copy, and it gave me a lot to think about.

Single parents -- especially mothers -- will appreciate the author's advice. This book is ideal for any single mom who's at her wit's end and feels as if no one understands. Author Shondreka Palmer has been there, and she holds nothing back as she talks about her own challenges and what's worked well for her and her son.

The content is rich and well-written. The writing style is generally heartfelt and sincere. Instead of being a pep-talk or a book of instructions, Ms. Palmer's tone is gentle, compassionate, and caring.

While her advice may seem like common sense, her insights and first-person stories bring this book to life.

I might have liked a closing chapter with a broader summary of the main points in this book. However, Ms. Palmer covered a remarkable range of topics, and readers receive some profound advice -- easy to apply, immediately -- in the 44 pages of this book.

I recommend this book to any single parent, but especially single mothers who feel exhausted, uncertain, judged, and frustrated by their responsibilities.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Author Shondreka Palmer offers hope in INDEPENDENTLY RAISING A MAN 29. November 2013

Life is full of challenges. I think we all can agree with that. What matters, though, is how you choose to handle the situations you are going through.

In her candid book INDEPENDENTLY RAISING A MAN author Shondreka Palmer shares not just her experience of being a single mother but how she realized the importance of being the person person and example possible.

As someone who doesn't have any children of my own it was great to see how so much of what she talked about in the book can relate to other individuals as well. She realized the importance of making the right decisions for herself as well as her son, and then she committed herself to a plan that would bring about the life she wanted.

Even after giving birth she talks about how she went back to being "Shondreka" by being healthy and developing a lifestyle that she could pass on to her child. He would also be able to see how his mother went about making the right decision in other areas of her life and giving him the time and attention he deserved while still being able to discipline when needed.

This book is really one of those reflections that touches on so much that comes with any new responsibility, and Shondreka Palmer does a great service to others by sharing what worked for her and what can be possible for others.

Insightful and encouraging, INDEPENDENTLY RAISING A MAN gives single parents hope.

This book was a surprisingly slim read. I had been expecting more pages, and in my opinion, I felt it could have been a little thicker.

That doesn't mean I think it's a bad book, since I am still giving it four stars. I think this book is a great quick read for those looking for a more brief read than one of these thick self-help books done by say Dr. Phil or whoever. There is plenty of practical advice in here, written in a easy-to-read style without any of the fancy psychological jargon you'd find in a Dr. Phil book. (Nothing against the man(

What kept me from giving this book 5 stars was that I feel that a few parts could have been more fleshed out. Early on in the book Shondreka tells women that if they're in an abusive relationship, they need to get out. Yes, I totally agree here, but Ms. Palmer could have also advised women to be more careful about who they are with, such as putting in warning signs about an abusive man so they can get out before things get really bad. I also feel this book could have included more information about money and budgeting, such as a checklist/chart and a few more specifics.

Ms. Palmer is spot-on about the daycare issue, and discipline. Too many parents dump their kids at someone's house because it's cheap, not because their child would be getting the nurturing and structure they need. Her advice about how to identify a good daycare is awesome.

For those who want a quicker read about advice on being a single parent, this book has plenty of nuggets of practical advice in it.
