In the Canadian wilderness, early in this century, Patrick Lewis grows up a child apart. Some time later in Toronto, an immigrant worker, suspended beneath the bridge he is helping to build, rescues from mid-air a nun swept away by the wind. The paths of these three people eventually cross, with explosive results. Born in Sri Lanka and now living in Canada, Ondaatje writes feelingly of the immigrant experience. That experiencethe ethnic mix, the battle against nature, the battle of worker against exploitationis familiar in outline but subtly different in detail because of the Canadian setting and Ondaatje's particular gifts. A fine poet, he gives us a series of piercing, beautifully controlled passages. If the novel finally spins out of controlepisodic, it seems not so much to resolve as dissolveit remains evocative throughout. Highly recommended for readers of serious fiction. I thought this was a mystical enchanting book. The descriptions of work were strong and powerful. Who can forget the images of dangeling from the bridge, dynamiting the log jams, digging the waterworks tunnel. Partrick is a "Billy Budd" character committed to ideals and responsibilities. A question. On page 224 it says "He [Harris] stood over Patrick." 'He lay down to sleep, until he was woken from out of a dream. He saw the lions around him glorying in life; then he took his axe in his hand, he drew his sword from his belt, and he fell upon them like an arrow from the string." Brackets are mine. I feel sure this a Biblical reference. Do you know where it is from? I am very interested to know the answer. Please reply to nhalff@aol.com

This is one of the best books a ever read. I cannot really tell why, but I guess I just loved the atmosphere painted so well by Ondaatje. The way he pictures the characters in this book, their tough lives at the beginning of the 20th Century in untouched Canada, their hopes, fears, love, makes you BE there and become one of them. I loved The English Patient and looked for some more of Ondaatje. I am very glad I found and read In the skin of a lion!

After the English Patient, which I thought was a beautifully written and constructed book, I found this to be a complete bore. I was uninvolved, uninterested and unaffected. After the plane trip for which I bought the book was over, I never returned to finish it.

If anyone can write what is beautiful - Ondaajte can.
By far Ondaajte's best novel. He is not any easy read and is definately not for the person looking for a light headed airplane novel.
