The cell walls seem to close in as he buries his head in his hands. The same thoughts repeat over and over in his fogged mind: It all happened so quick. One second I was getting out of my car, the next he was attacking me. Now I'm being charged with manslaughter! How did this happen? It was self defense . . . wasn’t it?

Prison is filled with people who thought they were defending themselves. Just saying, "It was self defense" isn't enough. When you claim self defense you are basically confessing to a crime. To keep you from being convicted you must provide evidence your actions remained within certain boundaries and you acted with just cause. That's assuming you stayed inside legal boundaries and acted within reason. If you didn't . . .

Now . . . are you sure you know what constitutes actual self defense? If the honest answer is no, then this book is an absolute must-read!

In the Name of Self Defense: What It Costs. When It’s Worth It. will challenge what you think you know about self defense. It's an in-depth exploration of what is and what is not self-defense. Both in the streets and in the eyes of our judicial system—and where most people go wrong. Using the information contained in this book could mean the difference between you laying in a parking lot, legitimate self-defense or prison!

This book presents information unlike any you've seen before, focusing not only on the aftermath of an incident, but on what commonly leads to violence and your actions before, during, and after. Learn about the limitations of real self defense, how to accurately assess a situation and concisely “articulate” the timeline of events to officers and legal professionals in a manner that reduces the chances of a misunderstanding . . . and a subsequent prison sentence.

Whether you want to add to the knowledge you acquired as a beginner in a self-defense class or you’re an instructor looking to further your own knowledge or a professional whose job requirements place you in potentially violent situations with dissatisfied clients or customers . . . it doesn’t matter! In the Name of Self Defense is a must-read for everybody! If you're lucky, you will never need the information contained within these pages, but if you ever require it what you learn from this volume will be vital.

Author and self-defense expert Marc MacYoung takes you on an entertaining journey through these lesser known (and some never-before-broached) aspects of self defense. MacYoung helps readers understand how to avoid violence, how to use the appropriate amount of force if it happens, and how to present the facts in a way that self defense is clearly understood and judged applicable to that situation. With a witty sense of humor and fifty years experience in a plethora of violent encounters coupled with a montage of experts in his corner, MacYoung delivers a thought-provoking examination of the world of self defense and protecting yourself legally after being forced to protect yourself physically.

5.0 von 5 Sternen "I did it your honor... but I had a darn good reason..." 4. Juli 2014
Von L. A. Kane - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
All too many folks fail to realize that "self-defense" is an affirmative defense. What this means is that you are admitting to an action that is a crime, but arguing that you should not be punished because it was justifiable under the circumstances. In other words, "I did it your honor... but I had a darn good reason."

It's worth repeating: claiming self-defense is admitting to the basic crime (murder, manslaughter, or whatever). The challenge is that if your self-defense plea fails, you will be punished for the crime you just admitted to. The burden of proof shifts to you. The prosecution does not need to prove that someone was killed or maimed or that you did it, your plea did his job for him. YOU must prove that you had no choice but to react the way you did. It's a hell of a lot harder than just babbling something about being afraid for your life. You have to know the law, understand the dynamics of situation you found yourself involved in despite any adverse affects of adrenaline, surprise, or shock, clearly articulate (directly and/or through your attorney) in a court of law, and prevail under harsh examination.

And that's where this outstanding book comes in.

The real question isn't whether you need the information contained herein, that goes without saying, but rather whom should you trust to acquire it from. After all, hundreds of folks including yours truly have written extensively on this subject. Once an outlaw street-fighter named "Animal," Marc has evolved into one of the good guys, currently a violence professional and expert witness, someone defense attorneys regularly call upon to bolster their client's cases. Most of us in the business consider him the grand old man in the fields of self-defense and violence dynamics. And, he's a hell of a writer too.

If you carry a concealed weapon, work as a bouncer, security professional, criminal defense attorney, or martial arts instructor, or are just a regular citizen who cares about protecting yourself and your family, you need this book. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great book for modern day self defense. 4. Juli 2014

A must read for martial artists, bouncers and security guards in particular, but everybody really should be aware of the repercussions of using self defense techniques. What if the assailant gets killed? Are you ready to do prison time for manslaughter? Or if he or she files a lawsuit against you, where do you stand? Marc MacYoung addresses these issues in a compelling and foreboding way. Great book. You may also wish to look at Rory Miller's book entitled "Facing Violence".

5.0 von 5 Sternen Another Awesome, No-Nonsense, Comprehensive Take from MacYoung on Violence and Personal Safety 4. Juli 2014
Von Barry Eisler - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
I was fortunate enough to get a sneak peek at this, MacYoung's latest, and it's at least as good as everything else he's ever written (and I've been reading him since 1989 when he published his first terrific book -- Cheap Shots, Ambushes, and Other Lessons). If you're a novelist and looking for information that will make all your depictions of violence and self-defense more accurate and compelling, MacYoung is one of the best resources out there. And if you want to learn to cost-effectively live more safely in the world, again, you don't want to miss MacYoung. Like Rory Miller and others in the reality-based, no-BS community, MacYoung is offering for just a few bucks what he paid in blood to learn. I'd call that a damn good bargain for readers.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Required Reading!!!! 29. Juli 2014
Von Jose A Tadeo - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This book is so full of valuable information that I even read all the footnotes.

This book should be required reading for fathers and sons. It is very easy to read and Mr. MacYoung explains very complex legal and psychological ideas in an easy to understand manner. This book will debunk all the cliches and misconceptions that are part of our popular culture regarding "self-defense". In return, you will replace such misconceptions with reliable knowledge that will save your life and/ or keep you out of prison.

You will learn how to avoid needless conflict. You will learn what to say and not to say to the police. You will learn how lawyers handle self-defense cases. You will learn how to read the signs and notice behaviors in others so that you can sidestep and avoid violence. You will learn how to articulate why and how you defended yourself in a way that the jury can also discount the popular nonsense that is rampant in our culture about self-defense. Have I mentioned that this book will challenge you to become a better person?

Above everything else, if you really read the book carefully you will gain mastery over your "self" and not allow your ego to hijack your responses and do something that you will regret.

I bought this book the very same day it was released for my Kindle, and I am only writing the review now because I read the book slowly, studied it well, and it still deserves a few more readings.

The book can be read in isolation, it is that rich in detail. Or it can supplement other great books on the subject by Mr. MacYoung and Rory Miller.

If you care about your safety and the safety of your loved ones, buy this book, read it, and share and discuss the information with them.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The term "self defense" may be the most universally misunderstood ... 6. Juli 2014
Von Liam Jackson - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
The term "self defense" may be the most universally misunderstood and misinterpreted concept in the civilized world. Prisons are filled with people who relied upon their personal understanding of such a seemingly simple, yet wildly convoluted issue. With this book, Marc MacYoung takes the term "self defense" to another level, bridging the enormous gap between emotion and logic: the two elements that often murk the dangerous waters between true "self defense" and "just another violent act." Do yourself a the book.
