In My Shoes: Teen Reflections on Hope & the Future 15. Mai 2011
Von arturo calderon - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
This book was written by young people all too familiar with wrong decisions made early in life. Decisions made initially by those who brought them into the world and often repeated by these authors. Each chapter tells of escalating anti-social behavior. I was captivated because I heard my own story repeated over and over again. I indentified with their search for belonging and identity because as a teen I made many of the same bad choices they describe in their writings. I found my self rooting for them as they discovered glimmers of positive possibilities in otherwise tragic existences. I was inspired by their refreshing grasps at hope and a better life. By the end of this book it is the reader who leaves most hopeful for these discounted children. As one of the ones who "made it out", I wait with baited breath for the 10 year follow-up sequel. Baited, slightly cynical but strangely hopeful...breath.

Real life stories of urban youth and hope for tomorrow. 31. Mai 2011
Von Rony Ortega - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
In My Shoes -Teen Reflections on Hope & the Future is a must read for all people serving or looking to better relate to today's urban youth. It is especially for educators who often never see the fruition of the seeds they plant in and out of the classroom. For parents/guardians who many times express feeling out of touch with today's youth. For students who wonder if they are alone in their struggles and if their dreams and goals will ever become a reality. For anyone else ready to listen to and learn from the raw, heartfelt, and real life stories of 45 urban high school students in Omaha, Nebraska.

The book is broken up into ten easy-to-follow themes ranging from Transformations and Wisdoms to Thoughts on Racisms and Exclusion, just to name a couple. From the ideas for the cover, to the theme of the book, to the personal stories inside, everything was designed and written by students of Omaha South High Magnet School in collaboration with The Omaha Young Writers Project. The deepest and unfeigned life stories of these 45 students are a reminder to all of us that we all have the innate desire to want to do well and that each one of us, old or young, educated or not, has a story to share.

This book served as a refreshing reminder to me that caring adults can help shape tomorrow's future by investing time in today's youth. That we, as a society, live in a world where we are programmed to quickly label and categorize everything, including people. That we all have something to learn from our youth if we can just stop and listen for one second. Lastly, this book took me on a personal journey 16 years back to my teen years in urban Los Angeles, California. The book is a testament that no matter the geographical location or time, the problems facing today's youth are almost identical across generations and locations.

The personal struggles shared by these teens are unfortunately common ones facing several of our youth today but what is uncommon is how these 45 students share their stories with the reader. When these students remove their "masks" and get real, they share everything with the reader; nothing is left out. These are not "Hollywood" students, or students several years removed from their struggles and everyday lives. These are everyday students in a real life high school, in the now, in the moment, and in the line of fire so-to-speak. Fabricated stories they are not. Nor are they stories written with the "adult" perspective or lens. These young, first-time raw authors vividly speak from their heart and give themselves entirely to you, the reader.

Grab the book with an open heart and listen attentively as these 45 urban youth take you on a flight and give you hope for a brighter tomorrow. You won't be disappointed!

Must read for students who want to tell their own story and need a model to get started 20. Mai 2011
Von KGibson - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
As an educator, I enjoyed reading this book for many reasons. My students will be able to relate to the lives of these authors. Reading about students from Omaha will help my Maryland students break down their labels and feel hopeful that they, too, can tell their stories. These courageous teenagers opened themselves up so that we can learn how they think, feel, and what they've experienced. Every entry had me feeling that the author was hopeful about their future in spite of obstacles they have encountered in their young lives. This writing project turned into much more than just publishing journal entries. Having so many willing mentors created a low adult/student ratio so in turn, these Omaha South High students received much encouragement. Adults and students bonding through such a valuable project is very meaningful for all parties involved. BRAVO to the students and staff at Omaha South High Magnet School as well as the mentors on this project! I just ordered my third copy and will be purchasing more in the near future.

Eye-opening and inspiring 18. Mai 2011
Von Natalie Peterson - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
It was a joy to work as a writing mentor with some of the students who contributed to this book, and I am thrilled with how the finished product turned out. These students hold very little back, and express how they always stay focused on the positive of hope despite the adversities they face--and continue to face, in some cases. This book is eye-opening for those who don't know/understand what teens--especially urban teens--face these days, and why teens do some of the things they do. It is inspirational, both for other teens (whether facing the same issues or not) as well as for adults seeking a positive message.

And the best part? All proceeds from this book will go toward providing literary speakers and events for students at Omaha South High Magnet School for (hopefully) years to come!

Teachers should read this book 16. Mai 2011
Von Connie Rath - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
This book brings stories of students and their futures. They might not have been told without the attention of teachers and other adults who wanted to know what mattered to them. Each story is a brave picture of what is and what can be.
