Kurzbeschreibung

Veteran police officer Sam McKenna has no trouble facing down criminals on a daily basis but breaks out in a sweat at the mere mention of commitment. A recent failed relationship strengthens her resolve to stick with her trademark no-strings-attached affairs.

Dr. Riley Connolly, a successful trauma surgeon, has spent her whole life trying to measure up to her family’s expectations. And that includes hiding her sexuality from them.

When a routine call sends Sam to the hospital where Riley works, the two women are hurtled into a life-and-death situation. The incident binds them together. But can there be any future for a commitment-phobic cop and a closeted, workaholic doctor?

3.0 von 5 Sternen Written in the Stars 23. Mai 2014
Von L. Taber - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Avid readers of lesbian fiction know that four star reviews likely mean the book is a compelling story shaped out of a pile of clunky grammar, or vice versa a clunky story stylishly written; that three stars mean don't bother unless it costs 99 cents; and five stars mean cross your fingers and hope the ratings mean at least it's a well-written halfway compelling tale. It's a sketchy genre and ratings mean a lot to me when picking through the dreck for the gems. That's why after I read this book it occurred to me there must be a band of lesbian fiction writers that agree to write inflated reviews for their peers. This is simply not a five-star work. Does that mean it's a terrible waste of money? Not really. It's a pleasant, tepid diversion of a read, easy to get through.

Criticism is a super subjective thing, and any dolt can offer up an opinion. Quite possibly I'm one of those dolts so I will list a few lez fic books that rate an unqualified five stars in my opinion -- Merry Shannon's Branded Ann, Cassandra Duffy's The Gunfighter and the Gearhead, Bett Norris' Miss McGhee, Melissa Good's Tropical Storm (the rest of the series, eh, 's okay), Greetings from Jamaica Wish You Were Queer, Inner Compass, Lynn Galli's Wasted Heart. It's not a comprehensive list, but you get the idea. These stories involve fully formed plots, multi-dimensional main characters, a solid cast of supporting characters, and top notch writing.

RJ Nolan is unquestionably a skilled writer. That's not the issue. What made this book flat was the bland plot, boring characters, and contrived "obstacles." Lynn Galli is one of those writers that pulls her cast of friends into different books fairly successfully. RJ Nolan pulls in a sister and her partner from LA Metro (which I have read) to much less successful effect. ****possible spoilers*** The sister Jess harbors an almost instantaneous magnitude of dislike for Sam McKenna's love interest Dr. Riley Connolly that is pretty unbelievable even if Jess were traumatized by Sam's shooting. On the contrary, Riley, whose crazy stalker "boyfriend" nearly rapes her and shoots her, and whose brutal death she witnesses, comes away relatively unscathed except for ostensibly some bad dreams. It's convenient that Sam's injuries keep her out of work and frequently at the hospital, but as with past Nolan work, the character's occupations and any inclusion of work into the story is very very superficial. Instead we trot through their after-hours efforts at dinner dates, softball games, and sizing up one another's apartments. Riley's excessively sinister homophobic aunt and uncle throw some wrinkles into Riley's life that forces her to move in with Sam, and, in what is the best part of the story, friendship slowly turns into love. The contrived, and even flimsy obstacles to Sam and Riley's happy ending are kind of eye-roll worthy. Nolan did tear a page from the requisite/routine Galli misunderstanding wherein one or both of our dear and exasperating protagonists flee one another in weepy, immature anger instead of communicating like grown ups. In this case it was "OMG, you were shot in front of me, and kicked by a hobo in front of me! I'm a danger to your life!" and "My flat chest will be sooooo unappealing to you I have to run away!To another city!"

I would say buy this book and enjoy it for what it is, if for no other reason than to smirk about the stereotypical plot devices you have come to know and love.

LA Metro Series

Veteran Police Officer, Sam McKenna has a commitment phobia. Dedicated to her job, chasing criminals, even putting herself in the line of fire doesn't worry her. But one mention from any woman of even the tiniest bit of commitment sends Sam running in the opposite direction. Sam is a love them and leave them kind of girl. A failed relationship and dark secrets from her past have made Sam this way.

Doctor Riley Connolly is a top notch trauma surgeon. Her whole life has been spent trying to please her aunt and uncle at the great cost of her own happiness. This includes dating men and hiding her sexual identity from everyone.

Sam and Riley's paths cross when Sam is called to the hospital and they meet for the first time. It's almost the last time, when both women face a life threatening situation. Suffering a traumatic fall out from their ordeal brings both women close together. Unfortunately, although attracted to each other, a relationship is out of the question, isn't it?

How can Sam, a confirmed single, out of the closet lesbian and a closeted doctor ever have a happy ever after?

I've been eagerly waiting for this next instalment in this brilliant, well written series since I read LA Metro a few years ago. RJ Nolan has written about the same characters with some welcome new additions. This time she's telling the story of Sam, Jess's sister. But Jess and Kim are playing a nice sized secondary part too.

This is a standalone book and you'll have no trouble getting right into it. But, I would highly recommend you read LA Metro first. This gives the background on some of the characters as well as being a wonderful read too. Why miss out?

These multidimensional characters are so easy to get to know and love. The scenic descriptions are so well written that I simply immersed myself in the story alongside of them all and lived it with them. The story is layered and flows steadily along at a nice pace. Once I started it, I had to finish it in one sitting.

Although this is a reasonable length, it still wasn't long enough for me. I'm so looking forward to more from RJ Nolan. For me, there is nothing like a tried and tested formula where romance is concerned. This is it at its best. It's no wonder it shot to number one best seller on Amazon.

I've added this to my re-read folder and once the series is complete, I'll enjoy reading it all again in it's entirety.

This is a fantastic read. I couldn't put it down. I loved how well written, plotted and edited In A Heartbeat was as I read. It is a great love story with many unexpected surprises. RJ's LA Metro is one of my all time favorite lesbian romances. In A Heartbeat has been added to that list. Buy it. You'll enjoy it and keep thinking/dreaming about it for a long time. 5.0 von 5 Sternen A very good read 12. Mai 2014

This is the first book I've read from this author and in this series, and I can honestly say that it won't be the last.

While it is part of a series and several references were made to the prior books, it does very well as a stand alone read. The story hooks you from the first chapter and never lets go. The author does a very good job of building the relationship between Sam and Riley. Two very strong women in the own right, however both have a vulnerability that they are hiding from the world. The way in which they come to terms with overcoming the demons of their past and discovering their future as a couple is both believable and touching.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Enjoyable sequel 18. Mai 2014

I liked this follow up to LA Metro. Sam and Riley were more interesting than Jess and Kim and I liked how their friendship moved into romance. The two leads spend time getting to know each other and the development of their feelings seemed organic.

The only quibble I have is given the amount of time spent setting up their friendship the romance seemed rushed. So too did the issues Riley had about her appearance, which just seemed to be magically resolved at the end of the book. I also wasn't sure why Sam's 'issue' was revealed to Kim but not to Riley. Still the story is nicely written and the characters are interesting. A nice way to spend a few hours.
