Sure, you can import and mix a track in Pro Tools. You can work with MIDI and you know your way around the Edit window. The UI is as familiar as your most broken-in pair of jeans. We get it—you don’t need another button-pushing guide starting from the ground floor.

Get uniquely in-depth coverage instead with In the Box Music Production: Advanced Tools and Techniques for Pro Tools. Author Mike Collins splits the book into three distinct sections covering how you use Pro Tools now—whether you’re working with the synths and samplers or loops and beats of a dance or hip-hop project, the soaring vocals of the next pop sensation, or the lush layers of an instrumental world music track. Use Pro Tools to its full potential with advice on studio techniques and full exploration of its internal capabilities. Learn to leverage Pro Tools and make it work for you with this guide that is fully grounded in real-world applications and process.

This book assumes that the user has some music production experience and has worked through the basics in Pro Tools.

4.0 von 5 Sternen So you want to be a DJ 5. Dezember 2014

So my husband and I recently "inherited" some official DJ equipment, and while I'm very much a novice this book actually showed me a lot. One of the biggest things I took away from this book is that I need to get a little more acquainted with the equipment. The book is well worded though and seems written in a conversational relaxed way.

I've got a long ways to go before I can say I'm a professional but I'm honestly glad that I have this book as at least a point of reference. If you are an someone with experience then this book is great to help you get the most out of your equipment. I actually also have a friend that legitimately DJ's and she said this book is actually excellent. So based on what is included in the writings and the overall potential it provides I would for sure recommend it to those in the market.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A great in-depth book that is grounded in real-world applications and processes 5. Dezember 2014

This is a great book for Pro Tools users who want to develop advanced skills and techniques in Pro Tools. It is grounded in real-world applications and processes and shows you how to make the tool work for you. Nevertheless, it is not an introductory book to Pro Tools. It assumes that the readers have some basic working knowledge with the tool (see author's other books for an introduction to Pro Tools).

The author has divided the book into three distinct sections covering advanced topics on Pro Tools. Part I "Working with Loops and Beats in Pro Tools" offers a in-depth understanding and essential techniques of how to bring files into Pro Tools, how to work with clips and loops, how to edit using Beat Detective and how to time stretch audio using Elastic Audio. Part II "Working with Virtual Instruments" deals with working with plug-in virtual instruments including drums, synthesizer and samplers. Part III "Studio Techniques" covers 'vocal' recording and processing, signal processing, effects, and mastering audio before final delivery.

The book is written in a casual and easy to follow style. Each chapter walks through the topic and workflow in great details. It is extensively illustrated with colorful screenshots of the Pro Tools in action. Tip and Note boxes are included along the way to provide helpful insights and tips.

This book is well written in a down to earth manner with minimum technobabble, and is easy to read and follow. If you want an in-depth coverage in Pro Tools that is grounded in real-world applications and processes, this book is for you.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Well written, well-indexed: a great tutorial 23. Dezember 2014

In the Box Music Production is a very well-written tutorial for using Pro Tools. It contains definitions, lots of full-color figures, and lists of sounds that can be emulated using the tools. It's really comprehensive - as an example, "As do the rest of the Arturia virtual instruments, the Wurlitzer V offers a number of additional features, including a vibrato rate control, a dynamics control, pickup distance and pickup axis controls, octave stretch, hammer hardness and hammer noise, 'note off' noise, sustain pedal noise, harmonic variation, and impedance controls - see Figure 6.95. There is also an adjustable velocity response curve and a 10-band graphic equalizer." Collins then goes on the list all the stompbox effects that are included and more information.

So, if you want to mix tracks, just do some samples, or create your own project, those are all covered in the book. The book intro suggests that the user needs to have worked through the basics in Pro Tools, but there is a fair amount of basic information that is covered in the early chapters, including definitions about style, patterns, part, instrument, etc., so even a novice should be able to get up and running from using this book.

It's an excellent resource for anyone interested in music sampling, DJs, or tracks.
3.0 von 5 Sternen fairly good, but most other books have much higher quality/price ratio 14. April 2015

Let's assume that everyone has read the Pro Tools manual, since it's free and very well written

This book adds many things to the manual, such as showing when it's helpful to disconnect the timeline and edit markers. The manual just describes how to do it, not when.
There are more examples like that, and all of them are great (e.g. the last pages of elastic audio chapter are great... after he spends many pages repeating the manual)

But then there is a lot of material that's not relevant for me - e.g long chapters on ReWire and extensive coverage on various plugins (although he has a good taste for plugins). The ReWire stuff is great for those who need it (I don't), but the plugin reviews don't belong in a book with this price tag - equally good reviews can be found online.

I wish the author would have spent more time explaining how he uses various Pro Tool features, because he explains things very well. And cut out all the material that can be found in any basic mixing book, Pro Tool manual or Sound on Sound plugin reviews. That would have justified the price.

In the Box Music Production by Mike Collins is targeted towards advanced users of Pro Tools. While I am not a beginner, I am not as advanced as I would like - I'm probably somewhere in the middle.
So even though this book is a bit of a stretch for my current skills, I found it to be very useful and informative.
Divided into three sections - Working With Loops and Beats, Working With Virtual Instruments and Studio Techniques - Collins provides an abundance of user tips, tricks and even screenshots to help you broaden your skills when it comes to using Pro Tools.
The layout itself is well organized and makes for easy reference - I keep it close by and tackle a bit at a time as my skills move to the next level.
Definitely not for beginners but if you are willing to challenge yourself and take things at a slower pace, those with moderate Pro Tools skills can also learn a lot from this book.
