Kurzbeschreibung

In a world crawling with vampires, Romania is the safest place left on earth. Thanks to the Little Council, there hasn't been a vampire on Romanian ground in over five centuries. But one day, Liana Cantacuzino, also a member of the Little Council and a descendant of one of the old noble families, is ordered to bring one in, covertly. Enter Maximilien Hess, a thousand-year-old old vampire determined to ruin the existing order of things.

Suddenly, Liana finds herself forced to protect Hess, instead of having the pandurs kill him. With the help from her trustful friends, Rodica Ghica and Ştefan Sturdza, and that of an innocent bystander, Dr. Jesse Carver, Liana has to find out what is going on and what the President is hiding from her. When all is revealed, Hess's secret changes everything.

The first novella in The Impaler Legacy series, a vampire saga like no other.

This book is different from your typical vampire story, it has a edge but also told in a much different manner with mystery and suspense, its a world with vampires and humans alike but in a country where its safe due to the Little Council. The story kept my interest and intrigued me to want to keep reading, just felt alittle rushed in parts. I thought the characters were good, Liana especially and Max but felt they could have been more... maybe more indepth. Love when Liana and Hess finally team up I enjoyed them. This book is part of a series and I look forward to reading the next book, I enjoyed this author I think she has a unique approach to a vampire story. I try not to give too much away in my reviews but would recommend if your looking for something different. 3.5 stars review by Nanee at upallnightreadallday.blogspot.com

5.0 von 5 Sternen Loved this story! 4. Dezember 2013

As I stated before, I wasn't sure I'd enjoy this book, but I absolutely loved it! I think it was a nice break from the romance stories I'd been reading. The entire book was very secretive, leaving you to wanting to know more about why Max was visiting. The last couple chapters, the whole book came together and now I'm committed. I have to read the rest of the series to find out what happens!

As soon as I finished this book, I went on to read book 1.5 in the saga, Sweet Surrender which is available for free. This was more of the love story and it also left me wanting to know more, more, more!

Both books were quick, short reads that left me on the edge of my seat, ready to find out what happens in the next book in the series. Definitely recommend this to everyone, not just vampire enthusiasts.

Have you ever had the pleasure of finding a book you thought would be awesome – with not only the blurb but also the general reviews pointing to that opinion? Good, I’m so happy for you!

Because such was the case with this book.

Now, have you ever found such a book, started reading it, and just when you finally found some kind of interest in the story so far, had the writer take it all away from you? Like being hungry, then someone allowing you to have a sniff of a warm meal, only for them to snatch it back right before you can take big, juicy bite. (damn, now I know how Tantalus must have felt!)

What do you know, this, again, was the case with this book!!!

Yup, you heard me right. It really is possible for a book to frustrate me that much. That will teach me to challenge fate to bring me a story that can actually slap me with only its ending as a sign of force…

Liana Cantacuzino is a member of the Little Counsil – a group that is more or less Romanian royalty – so, being something like a vampire’s personal babysitter, is the kind of duty she can do without, thank you very much. Still, the order to guard Maximilien Hess came from the President himself, so she has to comply – even if Romania is the safest place on Earth exactlybecause there haven’t been any vampires on its soil for more than five centuries. But Max’s arrival brings more than just discomfort for Liana – secrets that were buried for so long finally come to the surface, and Liana’s friends and foes are not the ones she thought them to be.

With this kind of plot, one can only imagine the intrigue and the political twists the story will have. Oh, I imagined. And imagined… and imagined… and imagined…

Sadly, imagination was the only thing that was left in the end…

I will leave aside the fact there was a part where the writer repeated herself – frankly, I don’t think it’s the right thing to blame when it comes to The Impaler’s Revenge - and go straight to the problem. Which was the way the book was planned out. An amateur would not have done that kind of mistake, and if it was intentional, then I’m even more enraged, damn it. At first, I found it fascinating. How true to her hatred for vampires Liana was, how Max didn’t act arrogant but was still reasonable about his needs as a vampire – in a hilarious, Chandler-Bing-like kind of acceptance – , and how awesome it was to see anoher side of the vampiric literature – one that was playing an active part on the world’s politics. Only a few of the reasons why I was so excited as the pages went by, no matter how dull the story was – because, let’s face it, had it not been for the scathing dialogues and banters, it would have been a disaster. But we all know that a writer needs time to develop their story, so I sucked it up and kept reading.

Well, guess what? The writer must have lost the notes to the rest of the story, because what she left us with was NOT satisfactory! You don’t give so many pages of boring everyday, political problems that the heroine has to put up with, peppering it with some info about her sexual life, constant thoughts of hatred and murder towards her charge and half-told past events, only to stop the story right when it FINALLY picked up in action and interest! This was not a cliffhanger – I should know, I love writing with cliffhangers, too! – it was a hiatus! Like you either don’t know how to end the book or don’t care at all!

“Hmm, what should the ending be? Oh, I know! I will start real slow. Then I will abruptly pick up the pace, and end it just at that precise moment when everything begins to make sense and Liana actually does something useful! And oh, silly me, why not rush through it all and leave it like a neutral news report while I’m at it? It will be brilliant, and it will make readers want to see the rest of the story in the next books!”

Sorry to burst that bubble of positive thinking, but this is not how it works. And this is the “cliffhanfer-loving” side speaking, in case you were wondering. You want to end the story and leave the reader hanging and wishing for more? Then don’t rush the damn ending after having dragged us through meaningless blah-blahs! Give a little more! I can’t possibly consider this a cliffy when it was so abrupt, I thought there was something wrong with my reading device and I had lost the rest of the book. After thorough research, I discovered that no, Liana’s – totally misplaced and out-of-the-blue – comment on her dating a doctor WAS actually the last line of the first book. And that’s when it hit me. There was no more to the first part. Nothing. Nada. Zero!

If it was accidental, I say the writer needs to work on her planning. If it was not… Well, pardon me while I make something clear in my usual, bitchy way: I don’t find this method of selling the next books in a series moral – or appropriate to a true writer’s ethics and behavior. When you want people to keep reading your stories, you use your writing voice and your art to convince them. You don’t dangle what COULD BE a story, full of gaps and unanswered question marks, in front of their face and then stop narrating because it’s a convenient way to keep them going. I understand that marketing plans are important in this kind of work, too, but they’re nor everything. In the end, what speaks for you is the story itself. If you’ve done your job right, it will eventually be known and loved, even if it takes some time.

I don’t know the reason why Ms. Visan stopped The Impaler’s Revenge at that particular point. And I regret to inform you that I won’t be reading the rest of her books, because she’s got the basics. But in the end, what counts is the result, and in this case, there was nothing that could be named as such…

5.0 von 5 Sternen A great vampire story! 21. Dezember 2013
Von Diana Elena - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
After reading “Blue Moon Café Series: Where Shifters Meet for Drinks” I knew that I won’t be disappointed by Ioana Visan’s new novella, “The Impaler’s Revenge”. The story is interesting and very different from what I was expecting when I first heard about it. The heroine, Liana Cantacuzino, is a tough, capable and intelligent woman, who can handle herself even in the presence of a powerful creature such as a vampire. She is open-minded and despite her own beliefs she can make necessary decisions so that her country can be saved from the coming danger. I would have liked to know more about her feelings and fears, but I’m sure I will find more about that in the next parts.

Our dear vampire, Maximilien Hess, was charming and quite funny sometimes, so except for his craving for blood he might have been a great guest and friend. The relationship between him and Liana was exciting to follow. I knew that Liana hated vampires because of her roots, but she can compromise that in behalf of everyone’s safety. This makes her a great character and someone we can understand and be friends with.

We also have Dr. Jesse Carter, who seems to be accustomed with vampires and helps Liana to find blood for Max. They share the antipathy for the bloodsuckers, so they easily connect. He is exactly what Liana needs when everything changes, someone to take care and support her. I can't wait to read more about them.

I’m very proud of the author, because she wrote this story about vampires in such a personal manner. It was the time for a Romanian to tell our side of the story, because after all the myth about vampires is part of our culture and history and not many know about that. So I’m really glad she did it.

What I also enjoyed were the similarities between Romania nowadays and the country I read about in “The Impaler’s Revenge”, which is awesome. The resembling is great and it gives an air of veracity, including the fantasy side. I would gladly live into a universe where we are the tough guys. Finally! :D

In the end, I want to say that I can’t wait for sequel and anything written by Ioana. If you haven't read this book yet, you should. You won't be disappointed.

Note: I received a copy of the book from the author for an honest review.
4.0 von 5 Sternen Great beginning to the series. 15. Dezember 2013
Von Melanie at Fang Freakin Tastic Reviews - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

The Impaler's Revenge is a little bit different from much of what I have been reading lately. When I say "different", I mean that in a good way. It has no romance, well, maybe a teensy bit, which I am totally cool with. This is more of a political thriller with vampires I think.

There are secrets and tons of questions that the reader gets to try to figure out. The reader is given a glimpse into the political life and relationships within the walls of a vampire free country, where the policy on vampires is, shoot first, ask questions later. Romania, ironically enough, is the only vampire free country in the world. It's been that way for five hundred years thanks to strict border laws and the large numbers of trained soldiers that would have no problem killing a vampire on sight.

Liana Cantacuzino is a member of the "Little Council" who inherited her position, as has been done since the council was founded by select noble families in order to keep the vampire population under control. Liana takes her position very seriously and keeps most people she interacts with at arm's length. She obviously has intimacy issues. She is something of a complicated woman who has a trauma in her past that still affects her and her personality.

Liana is given the task of insuring the safety of Maximilien Hess,, a thousand year old Vampire whose presence has been requested by the President of Romania. It is a no questions asked type of situation and Maximilien won't reveal his secrets as to why he is in Romania. Max (which is NOT his preferred nickname!) is kept under constant surveillance and tight security to make sure he not only behaves, but also that no one kills him on sight. What is the President hiding from the council? The truth can endanger the entire country.

I enjoyed this book. It had an interesting storyline, and realistic characters. I think my favorite character in this story was actually Maximilien. He had a sense of humor despite the fact that the people he was dealing with had an obvious dislike and distrust for him. I think there is a lot more to this character that Visan's readers would like to learn about. I think he probably has a cool history that would make a great story.

The story line itself was a good idea. I enjoyed the aspect of trying to figure out what Max and the President were hiding. I didn't figure it out until the end, which is cool. I did feel like I would have liked to have more of the story a little bit sooner than it was presented. It seemed like the first of the book was just the characters hanging out and we weren't given an idea that there was something nefarious was afoot until later. For all we knew, Max was there to help the President pick out some new suits or something (everyone knows Vampires have impeccable taste). All of the best action really didn't start until that last bit of the book.

I would have liked more back story on Liana as well as Max. They were both very interesting characters to me, and I was just itching to find out more about them and why they were who they were.

The Impaler's Revenge is the first novella in The Impaler Legacy Series. I look forward to reading the rest of this series. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a more "grown up" type of Vampire book. Anyone who enjoys a good book with political twist and the added benefit of having Vampires involved would enjoy this book. It's a solid 4 stars in my opinion.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for an honest review.
