Enter Maximilien Hess, a thousand-year-old vampire determined to ruin the existing order of things. When all is revealed, Hess's secret changes everything, and a reluctant alliance is formed because the alternative is much worse.

Whenever I first started reading The Impaler Legacy, I could immediately tell that I was in for a vampire epic. From the very beginning, I was swept up into this tale. Ioana Visan has a way with words that wraps you in her story, and you don't want to leave its pages. The attention that was paid to the paranormal parts of the story are very appreciated. It's so well thought out, and that really shows as you're reading it.

The characters in this series encompass such a broad spectrum. I easily found myself enjoying and appreciating several of them. Liana was my favorite, though. Whenever I finished the last of this series, I had the feeling of missing a best friend.

There are some very dark scenes in this series, and I think Ioana Visan does a fantastic job at handling them. Her writing is able to craft these bone killing scenes with such clarity. I would love to read more by this author just because of her talent for making the world leap off of the pages and surround you.

Every vampire fan should consider this a must read series. It breaks the mold and carves out its own unique place with vampire fiction. It isn't for easy readers. This series is very involved. Warning: There is a cliffhanger with absolutely no promise of resolving it.

**I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. My thanks to Ioana Visan.

This is the complete series of books in the Impaler Legacy & well worth the money for the whole lot. Glad to have been able to re-read all the short stories under one cover. I hate waiting for next instalments Plus had the chance to read the new addition to the stories There are a lot of vampire stories about This series is definitely a refreshing and original take on Vampires. The Impaler Legacy Omnibus is a fast pace action filled book.

Liana Cantacuzino is a member of the Little Council in Romania, a descendent of one of the old noble families. This book takes place in a time when vampires and humans live together throughout the world. It would be great for Maximilien and Almira to have their own book

I don't want to say to much all i can say is read it for yourself it's a great read If this was made into a Film it would be a EPIC

With all the books, movies and series out there, it seems like all vampire sagas have been done already. But you'd be wrong to think so. Writer Ioana Visan takes the common take on vampires, turns them around and spins a whole different kind of story. With the whole world being aware of vampires, she has the lead character Liana, living in the only vampire-free country, actually not only being very familiar with vampires, but also hating them through upbringing. Due to circumstances, she has to team up with first one, and later an entire army of vampires, in order to save her country, her life and ultimately the world.

Despite this being a heavy story, and a tense read at times, a laugh or a pun are never that far around the corner, no matter how bad the circumstances may be. That combined with some romance (but not in the way you expect it!) makes it for a much lighter read than the summaries suggest.

The characters are very well fleshed out and you truly care for them. Even though, as in a good epic tale, there are character deaths and many losses, which make you fear for everyone's safety.
Through the course of the 3 novellas and 3 short stories covered in this omnibus, Liana, who I liked as a character from the get-go, learns that despite her upbringing there are vampires she can trust, which changes her worldview quite a lot, which I assume will have it's reflection in the future of how Romania will be ruled.

Below my (somewhat) condensed reviews of the seperate novellas - so spoilers!

#1 The Impaler's Revenge

Through main character Liana, Ioana takes you by the hand and introduces you to the world her story is taking place, as well as the characters who are involved.
Liana (an important member of the "little council" ) receives from the president of Romania the assignment to pick up vampire Maximilien Hess and escort him into her country. This is a rarity, as vampires are not allowed to enter Romania, thus making it the only "vampire-free" country of the world (which is quite ironic, considering the origins of the Dracula stories) and guard him while there.

Liana does not know what the reason was for this strange assignment, but nevertheless carries out her orders, even tho begrudgedly. Which puts her in the position of having to arrange blood for him with the help of Dr. Jesse Carter - who provides a look into the outside world which does include dealing with vampires - and having to entertain him because he gets bored.

You can tell she doesn't like it at all, and through her interactions with her friends and how they react you learn slowly more and why. In her dealings with Maximilien, you learn the history of the countries history and how the politics work.

#2 A Victory That Counts

Time has jumped forward a bit. After learning in the previous novel that there is a new breed of vampires, which even makes the older race of vampires feel threatened, Romania, once the worlds only vampire-free country has striken a deal with this older race, to join arms against the new threat.

For this cause, Liana, our female leadcharacter is sent out to New Zealand with an army of Pandurs (Romania's guards, initially trained to defend the country against vampires) where the new breed of vampires stems from. This to learn more about their origins, nature, and most important, how to defend themselves against them.

In this warlike setting, which is undoubtly a lot grittier than the first novella, there are some expected fight scenes, even including torture and slaughter, yet it never gets too gruesome for the squeemish ones amongst us.

#3 Order Restored

WIth Jesse being kidnapped now, Liana is hell-bent on finding him. To do so however, she lets Max put a compulsion on her with regards to her feelings for Jesse, so she can make judgments with a sound mind. Then, by accident she stumbles upon a base of the new breeds and finds out what they are up to there. This part is chilling, and told so vividly, I was literally cringing when reading. To my surprise she finds Jesse fairly quickly, but of course things are not as they seem and Liana has to make a horrible agreement to get back her loved one. One you can't believe she truly would go through with, but our main character has gone through a lot, and perhaps this changed her morals just enough?

This is the complete series of books in the Impaler Legacy. I must say I was surprised at the ending. I was hoping to have more on Maximilien and Almira. Other than wanting more on them and how they met the series was good. I don't like the council and the control they have. I love Jesse and I felt bad for Liviu and Radu. Radu because although he turned he loves his country and what they stand for. He stays loyal to the end and love Rodica and she love him. It's sad the country's laws will keep them apart. Stefan I am on the fence about. He's self absorbed in appearances and keeping them up but is fiercely loyal to his friends. I agree with Jesse though that he wants Liana to himself.

As Liana is assigned to keep maximilien safe in romania, she learns things that tug at her loyalties. Maximilien is a vampire and supposedly the only one in the borders of Romania. Why? Romania has sealed its borders from vampires. Maximilien is there on a mission one that when Liana finds out what it is is shocked and feeling betrayed by her country. As times goes on, she has many things warring at her heart. Her feelings of betrayal by her country about a few things, her feelings about her friend Radu and his new status, how she feels about Maximilien since he is a vampire and she is supposed to want to kill him, her feelings toward the deliciously kind and caring Dr. Jesse Carver, her feelings on the situation going on that maximilien tells her about. All this comes to a head at the end of the first book but we do see a happy ever after for her and Jesse or at least the beginnings of one in the first book and some issues on how she feels begins to be seen.

the second book brings us ahead in which Liana and Maximililn are the leaders of their respective armies working together to save humanity and vampires from this horrible new breed of vampire. Radu is by her and Max's side as well except he stays with the vampires. Jesse has come along as well so he can be with her how sweet is that. realization occurs that they are all in a situation none expected to be a bad as it was. this new breed is ruthless and something no one could imagine. As they fight them Liana has to become something she always dreaded and loses some of her humanity in the process. No matter what though Jesse is there to support her. this book we see her lose close friends, sees Max as a friend and protector a little more than before, realizes her love for Jesse, watches her world fall apart as people are used as puppets and changes in who she is occurs as she must make hard decisions. War is taking its toll on them all and this book has them to the brink of breaking but as they learn to work together victory becomes theirs. This though is short lived because they are killing the army but not the beast who is creating the breed. A book that has you reeling in the end and hoping against hope for a happy ending.

the third book we have Liana hating Max. Not because of who he is but because of the hard decisions and actions he has taken to assure victory and safety for people. Although Liana knows what he is doing is right it doesn't reconcile well with her in fact she unconsciously takes revenge on max for this and betrays him. This does leave him feeling hurt but he understands. Max finds Liana to be a puzzle to him but he cares for her as a friend even if Liana doesn't realize this until the end. This book we see the crew go after the breeds breeding ground and when the action occurs the things we are privy to hurts. Jesse is addicted to the bite of a vampire poor guy, Max sacrifices for Liana and Liana is broken and betrays Max. At the height of it all Spanu show his old self and helps Liana, Max helps save Rodica, Liana and Jesse and we have action galore. We see friendships emerge and alliances formed. I still though want to see the relationship of Max and Almira for he deserves some peace and happiness.

This is a wonderful series that will have you rooting for Max to show Liana not all vampires are bad and have Liana see Radu as the man she always called friend and not as a vampire. you will see love and support in its most beautiful and humbling form and watch as people work together for a common cause. Alliances are formed, trust is built and betrayed and friendship emerges as well as love in this action packed fascinating tale of vampires and humans.

The Little Council has kept vampires out of Romania for five centuries. For reasons unknown, the Prime Minister has invited Maximilien Hess, a thousand-year-old vampire onto Romanian soil. Liana Cantacuzino, of the Little Council, has been tasked with keeping an eye on the vampire, an assignment she is not thrilled about.

There are a lot of vampire stories in the market place. This series is definitely a refreshing and original take on the subject manner. The Impaler Legacy Omnibus is a fast pace action filled book.

One of the things that I found revitalizing was that the heroine doesn’t fall in love the main vampire. Considering that Liana has been raised to hate vampires, this makes the tale all the more believable.

The story is thoroughly developed, with interesting characters, an attention-grabbing conflict, and a satisfying ending. The Impaler Legacy Omnibus is a wonderful adult vampire novel with an appealing twist.
