"I claim for the image the humility and powers of a madeleine." Filmmaker, photographer, writer, and traveller Chris Marker has never respected the boundaries between genres. His landmark 1964 film La Jetee is made up almost entirely of stills, its one moving image as thrilling as the Lumieres films must have been for their original audiences. Since then, Marker's films (including the features Sans Soleil, and most recently Level Five) have continued to stretch the definition of the art, merging at times with the essay, political manifesto, personal letter, art installation, even the computer game. In IMMEMORY, Chris marker has used the format of the CD-Rom to create a multi-layered, multimedia memoir. The reader investigates 'zones' of travel, war, cinema, and poetry, navigating through photographs, film clips, music, and text, as if physically exploring Marker's memory itself. This unique work is a veritable 21st century Remembrance of Things Past, an exploration of the state of memory in our digital era. With it, Marker has both invented a literary form and perfected it. IMMEMORY is a CD-Rom that will work on any Macintosh computer running System 7.5 through Mac OS 9 (including the 'Classic environment' of Mac OS X).

I have only seen the French version, but be aware that this CD-ROM is not as "visual" as you might expect. It was made using HyperStudio in 1997, and the real content is the text. It does have an image slide show and a few clips, but most of the visuals are backgrounds for the text. It is cool, and I enjoyed navigating the terrain charted by this "cartographier le pays imaginaire." But you'll be happier if you tone down the expectations--it is not really a world to get lost in or an interactive film.

To know all the works by Chris Marker, it is today possible thanks to new technologies, and this CD-rom is very interesting for everybody interested in this artist, one of the richest artists in the last century.

Content Sounds Great -- Wish It Worked on a PC

Why this is being released as a Mac-only CD-ROM is not clear. Since more than 90% of the personal computers in use are Wintel (MS Windows with x86 processors) machines (used to be called "IBM Compatibles"), it seems silly to release a CD-ROM that only works on a Mac (great as they are).
