Über den Autor
Andy McNab, Sergeant, SAS, joined the British infantry as a boy soldier. In 1984 he was "badged" as a member of the SAS--the British special forces--and has since been involved in elite intelligence and combat operations worldwide. During the Gulf War he commanded Bravo Two Zero, a patrol that in the words of his commanding officer "will remain in regimental history forever." After six months of medical treatment immediately following his release by the Iraqis, Andy McNab was back on active service. He remained with the SAS until February 1993, at which time he was the most highly decorated soldier in the British Army. He is also the author of Bravo Two Zero.

In /Bravo Two Zero/ bleiben Andy McNab keine zwanzig Seiten, um seine Vita bis zum Einsatz im Golfkrieg zu schildern. Seinen Werdegang als Soldat des Special Air Service, der Spezialeinhait der Britischen Armee fuer Kommando- und Antiterrorunternehmen beschreibt er in /Immediate Action/ auf 500 Seiten umso ausfuehrlicher. Der noch minderjaehrige Andy geht zur Armee, um den armen Verhaeltnissen seiner Londoner Jugend zu entgehen, die ihn frueher oder spaeter auf die schiefe Bahn bringen werden. Seine Qualifikationen (vermutlich vergleichbar mit einem schlechten Hauptschulabschluss) lassen eine Verwendung als Hubschrauberpilot nicht zu, und so wird er Infanterist, wo er sich als Ausbilder auszeichnet.
/Immediate Action/ ist in demselben trockenen Stil geschrieben wie /Bravo Two Zero/, und genauso voll von Informationen. Deshalb ist die Persoenlichkeit des Autors nur ein Punkt unter vielen, die Interesse verdienen: Andy McNab ist eigentlich erschreckend antriebslos. Es gibt ein paar Punkte in seinem Leben, wo er mit vergleichsweise wenig Einsatz gewisse Wege einschlaegt, die ihn mit etwas (oder etwas mehr) Durchhaltevermoegen an Positionen fuehren, die er ausfuellen kann und in denen er glaenzt. Erst die Begegnung mit SAS--Soldaten in Nordirland und das Training der SAS veraendern das Bild. Nun muss McNab Knochenarbeit leisten um in die Sondereinheit aufgenommen zu werden und die ``Probezeit'' zu durchzustehen. Es ist nicht Faul- oder Traegheit, sondern ein ganz eigentuemliches Zusammenspiel von taeglichen kleinen Leistungen und einer gluecklichen Hand bei der Wahl seiner Zukunft. Teil der Faszination, die mich bei der Lektuere gepackt hat.
/Immediate Action/ ist im Original nicht unbedingt leicht, es sind viele Ausdruecke aus dem britisch--englischen Slang und dem Jargon der Britischen Armee drin, denen der Leser (vorwiegend) amerikanischer Buecher nicht leicht folgen kann. Aber das soll kein Hindernis sein, das Buch ist immernoch zuegig lesbar und verstaendlich. (Dies ist eine Amazon.de an der Uni-Studentenrezension.)

Andy McNab, the elite warrior of the most "special" military unit in the world swept me through half his military career in just a few days. This included breaking and entry at the age of 15-16, service with his parent regiment The Royal Green Jackets, selection to the Regiment, training missions in the middle-east, covert operations in Northern Ireland,counter terrorist duties with the Quick Reaction Force and also one failing marriage after another. His attention to detail overwhelmed me, I got glued to the book. Never in my life have I read a book at such speed. What also makes this book (and of course his three others) so exhilirating is the fact that this is a documentary, this is real. It all actually happened to this man. What it gave me besides pure reading pleasure was an overwhelming urge to leave Norway, apply for British citizenship, join the BA and eventually go for selection. Too bad Norway is not a commonwealth country. Sincerely: Experience this book! I also highly recommend: Andy McNab - "Bravo Two Zero", "Remote Control" and is latest work of "fiction" "Crisis Four", Cameron Spence - "Saber Squadron" and "All Necessary Measures", Gaz Hunter - "The Shooting Gallery", Chris Ryan - "The One That Got Away" and his "Gordie Sharp"-novels.

Andy McNab lets you see the human side of the SAS. As you read along, you realize these men are not supermen or Rambos, but rather ordinary people who have been trained to a superior level. Even experienced SAS men seem to practice routines over and over again. One thing that they do have, that many don't, is physical and mental endurance. I really liked this book. It was a great read. It was slightly disappointing that some operations ended with no real results, but then, this is not fiction. What you do get a good understanding of, is how well the SAS prepares for any operation they have to perform. The publisher claims that the British government tried to stop publication of this book. I cannot understand why - no SAS operation secrets are exposed. If you're looking for cover to cover action, go rent Rambo. If you want to get some insight into how the SAS operates, you'll enjoy this book. If I had to choose between this book and Bravo Two Zero (one of McNab's other books), Bravo Two Zero wins, but I read both, and I am happy I did.

The true life of a soldier
I enjoied this book very much, because the facts that happened are real and trilling. I have also read bravo two zero, and I think it was one of the best action-book I have read.

It was a great book. Loved it!!!!!!!!!!!
This book was great!!! It has a lot of action and is very descriptive. I have not yet read the other books he has wrote but I know they will be just as good or better!!!!
