Most of the photographs in "Images of Preston" have been gathered from the archives of the Lancashire "Evening Post", which was founded in 1886. Unfortunately, newspaper photography in those days was non-existent and the images in this collection were mostly taken between the 1930s and the 1970s. Nevertheless, the photographs provide a pleasurable and nostalgic journey into Preston's colourful past. Prestonians have an immense pride in their ancient borough, which was recognised by the monarchy as far back as 1179 and is celebrated every 20 years by a week's Guild carnival events a privilege which has become the envy of many larger towns and cities. The selection of photographs includes fascinating scenes of civic and Guild events, public transport, celebrities, cinemas, theatres, industries, sport, education and former familiar streets and buildings. Memories of the past will be revived for many who have lived in the Preston area and, for those less familiar with it, the scenes will also present interesting views on how the town used to look.
