Fritz Leiber not only invented the phrase "sword and sorcery", but was one of the earliest and wittiest masters of this vein of heroic fantasy. His famous duo--huge Northern barbarian Fafhrd and his nimble, devious companion the Gray Mouser--first saw print in 1947 and pursued their adventures and swordplay for more than 40 years. This is the first British appearance of Ill Met in Lankhmar, a 1995 omnibus comprising Swords and Deviltry and Swords Against Death (both 1970), assembled from still earlier shorts. The Hugo-winning title piece relates the heroes' first joint exploit in the inexhaustibly colourful and sleazy city of Lankhmar, moving with breathtaking speed between farce, tragedy, bizarre ruses and desperate swordplay. Also included are tales of both companions' origins and adventures all over their world of Nehwon on dubious commissions or in search of generally booby-trapped treasure. Leiber's own favourite is here: "Bazaar of the Bizarre", his comic-sinister version of the traditional Magic Shop story, where the goods are rubbish disguised by illusion-spells and the haplessly bedazzled Mouser has no idea that the shop's gorgeous caged girls are in reality giant spiders ... This is an excellent introduction to fantasy's best-loved pair of heroic rogues. --David Langford

Leiber's stories are a remnant from a time when writing was generally excellent. Crisp, well-written..never a wasted word. Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser are excellent heroes. This edition in particular is good because of the lengthy introductions written by Leiber. He explains the origins of Fafhrd & the Mouser while at the same time telling a little about his life. Stories that should be read by everybody.

This book is the earliest adventures of Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, their early lives, how they met and adventures. The novellas are rich in detail of the surroundings and show that the world of Nehwon is well-developed. Fafhrd and The Grey Mouser's interactions are realistic (except perhaps for the high-flown language) and kept me turning pages eagerly. Lots of hack'n'slash as well as intellectual puzzles, a few moments of hair-raising suspense and some definite sizzle. Classic swords & sorcery with very little mumbo-jumbo and no complicated explanations.

"Ill Met in Lankhmar" contains some of the very finest fantasy stories ever written. A short review such as this cannot even begin to convey their exquisite perfection, their vista-expanding cannon volleys of purest, most unfettered imagination, their sun-core bright wit and ebullience. The writing alone is enough to make one laugh and cry at the same time, such is Leiber's complete mastery of the written word. It is a source of unending mystification to me why so few people these days seem to have read the Fafhrd and Gray Mouser stories. And now, artist supreme Mike Mignola has created a new set of covers. WHAT MORE COULD YOU POSSIBLY ASK FOR? Renewed youth? The power of second sight? Immortality?

Like Fantasy Crack-you will be hooked and come back for more

Before I begin my review talking about the content of this compilation - - let me first begin by saying that the structure, illustrations, and organization of these compilations are extremely well done...complete and beautiful, these compilations are a must have for any fantasy reader...even if you have the original novels. Now, the content was unbelievable...so thick and rich, I believe Fritz would have compared his own writings to a tall, warm tankard of stout ale, and long drag from a joint. So rich, thick and satisfying, the words take time to digest and they sound perfect in your head. The story, besides having the greatest adventures, has the two best characters of all literature...in fact the characters and the stories told by Leiber are so pungent, that it is not only the two anti-heroes, but three...you as the reader are there with them, you can feel the COOLTH of the wine tankard as it is quaffed, and you feel the stinging wit and sacarsm shared. You are mystified by the unreal in Newhon, and you embrace the taverns and wet, soupy mist. My kids will grow up reading Leiber, as should we all
